Cool fact: In Kyoto, maiko are apprentice geiko, and their elaborate kanzashi hair ornaments traditionally change with the seasons.
Description: Ink, gouache and digital. Japanese women have been perfecting the art of entertainment for hundreds of years. Yet the term geisha, or geigi, only emerged in the 18th century. Geishas are seen as successful, skilled and emotionally strong. There is no equivalent to geisha in the West, therefore, the literal translation ‘entertainer’ is often used.
