The Omaha Cardinals was the name of an American minor league baseball club based in Omaha, Nebraska, from 1947 through 1959. It played in the Class A Western League through 1954 and in the Triple-A American Association from 1955–1959 as an affiliate of its major league namesake, the St. Louis Cardinals.

In 1885, the Omaha Omahogs became founding members of the early Western League. The Omaha Omahogs played as members of the Western League in 1887, 1892, 1898 and 1900–1901. The 1885 inaugural Western League season featured the Omahogs and the Cleveland Forest Citys, Indianapolis Hoosiers, Kansas City Blues, Milwaukee Milwaukees and Toledo Avengers. Omaha gained a franchise in the new league after St. Paul, Minnesota withdrew their proposed team due to financial difficulties. Omaha folded after starting the season with a record of 4–24. Omaha was replaced by the Keokuk Hawkeyes on June 6, 1885. The league itself folded on June 15, 1885.

The Norfolk Elk Horns or the shortened "Elks" was a primary moniker of the minor league baseball teams based in Norfolk, Nebraska between 1914 and 1941. The Norfolk minor league teams played as members of the Class D level Nebraska State League1914–1915, 1922–1923), Tri-State League (1924), Nebraska State League (1928–1938) and Western League (1939–1941). The Norfolk minor league teams hosted home games at Athletic Park. The Norfolk Elks were a St. Louis Cardinals minor league affiliate in 1936. Norfolk played as an affiliate of the New York Yankees from 1937 to 1941 and adopted the Norfolk "Yankees" moniker in 1940.

Wade Boggs is an American former professional baseball third baseman. He spent 18 seasons in Major League Baseball, primarily with the Boston Red Sox. He also played for the New York Yankees (1993-1997), and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (1998-1999). He won the 1996 World Series with the Yankees over the Atlanta Braves. Boggs became the 23rd player to reach 3,000 career hits. His hitting in the 1980s and 1990s made him a perennial contender for American League batting titles. Boggs was elected to the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005.

Lincoln was first represented in organized baseball in 1886 as the Tree Planters in the reorganized original Western League. Lincoln's 19th-century teams played in various leagues between 1886 and 1895. In 1906, Lincoln joined the Class A Western League as the Ducklings (1906), Treeplanters (1907), Railsplitters (1908–13) and Tigers (1914–16). During this time, team nicknames were often unofficially assigned by sportswriters, and The Encyclopedia of Minor League Baseball, published by Baseball America in 2007, lists other nicknames for the Lincoln franchise of the time, including Greenbackers and Antelopes.
