Among the dealership-based supercar builders of the 1960s and ’70s — including Yenko, Nickey, Grand Spaulding Dodge, and Royal Pontiac, most of these dealerships of the muscle era offered what was known as a 'supercar' service, which essentially provided a brand new, stock-bodied vehicle with plenty of extra horses, using either a highly tuned factory power plant or a high-performance crate engine. Baldwin Chevrolet took a slightly different approach, taking new Chevys sold through is dealership in Baldwin, New York (Long Island), and then delivered them to Joel Rosen’s Motion Performance speed shop (also in Baldwin), where they became street-legal, turn-key drag cars. many of which had optional wild custom body kits

Atco Dragway was built in 1959, with the first racers (Motor Masters Hot Rod Club) started at the top end, racing towards the starting line. The club hosted the official opening day on Memorial Day weekend in 1960, making Atco Dragway the oldest drag strip in New Jersey. The sanctioned track has held more than 250 events in a single year, making it one of the busiest tracks in the country. After 63 years of service, the South Jersey racetrack abruptly announced it's closing in July 2023, canceling all scheduled events and causing waves of upset throughout the drag racing community.

During the drag racing and muscle car eras, independent speed shops were a common sight in most every major city, and New York was no exception. Everyone wanted their car to go faster, or at a minimum look like it went faster, and Bronx Speed Shop was one of the places to help out with that. From all out supercharged racing engines and bombproof transmissions to polished mag wheels and chrome side pipes, Bronx Speed Shop was the go-to spot for countless New York gear heads over the years.
