I was on my first visit to Utah, it was my first day, with a visit to Dead Horse Point State Park on the agenda. Getting out of the car and looking over the cliff and down into the valley was a stunning introduction to the extraordinary landscape. The scale and the colour in the panorama were truly breathtaking. This image is a composite of several images captured from near to the visitor centre, taking in perhaps 180° of view. I suppose I didn't know where to stop as I scanned the horizon with my camera. The word 'awesome' barely covers the emotion.

I took a gamble. I was staying in Moab for the night. I had checked into the hotel, went for dinner and on my way back to the hotel I met a local photographer walking down the road. I asked him about places to go and shoot a sunset. He wasn't very nice or friendly. He just said "you won't find a place around here." So I walked off and decided I would take the drive to Dead Horse Point State Park. I had found it doing some research at dinner. I was glad I went.

Chanticleer Point is a geographical landmark on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge. It is the first notable overlook encountered traveling east on the US Historic Columbia River Highway, and the overlook is part of the Oregon state park system. The official name of this overlook is the "Portland Women's Forum State Scenic Viewpoint". There is a plaque at the site that describes the forum's support of this landmark. January 4 2022 Sunset at Point Lookout State Park in Scotland MD

The sunsetting over Dead Horse Point State Park. A few hours earlier I was sitting at dinner in Moab and while doing a search for sunset locations came across this State Park. At first I thought it was a bit far from where I was staying. I took a gamble and WOW. This place was amazing and definitely somewhere I would return to.

Standing on the Point Buchon Trail, which is south of Montana de Oro State Park on the coast of central California, I observed this flock of pelicans flying low over a point called Disney Lookout, or Fat Point. Looking closely, one can count 19 birds in the photo, making it appear as though they're racing. Point Buchon Trail is on PG&E property, so a reservation is necessary to hike there. Shot with a Pentax 645Z, 45mm, f11.
