Description: Turoń (say: TOO-rohn) is the horned, black, shaggy beast of Polish Christmas caroling: a carved wooden head on a stick with a clacking jaw and a bell, worn by a caroler hidden under a blanket. It burst into the house with the carolers, danced, snapped at the girls and, by tradition, brought a fertile year. To get it out again, the host paid the carolers off with coins and a gift from the pantry. Original engraving-style artwork: the beast under a caroler's star on a snowy night. Description: Gwiazdor (say: GVYAHZ-dor) is the Christmas Eve gift-bringer of western and northern Poland: Greater Poland, Kashubia, Kuyavia, Warmia. He grew out of the carolers who walked with a star, hence the name: a sheepskin coat worn fur-out, a tall fur cap, a hidden face, a sack of gifts and a birch rod. He asked the children their prayers and carols - good answers got a present, bad ones met the rod. Original engraving-style artwork: Gwiazdor under the first star of Christmas Eve.
