Description: KLOL FM was a rock station in Houston, Texas that was on the air from 1970 until 2004. The last song broadcast by the legendary station was also the first it ever played, "I'm Free." Like many early rock stations, KLOL began as a free form/progressive outlet, then morphed over the years to AOR and then classic rock. KLOL now airs a Spanish Pop format as Mega 101.
Description: Radio Veronica was a Dutch pirate radio station that began broadcasting in 1960 from a ship anchored in the North Sea, catching much ire from authorities. It was set up by independent radio, TV, and household electrical retailers in the Netherlands to stimulate the sales of radio receivers by providing an alternative to the state-licensed stations of the Netherlands. Broadcasts began on April 21, 1960, with the station announcing itself as VRON (Vrije Radio Omroep Nederland; Free Radio Station [of the] Netherlands) but changed to Radio Veronica, after the poem "Het Zwarte Schaap Veronica" (The Black Sheep Veronica) by the children's poet Annie M. G. Schmidt. Radio Veronica became the most popular station in the Netherlands.
Description: For nearly two decades in Dallas, a strange, winged elephant creature could be found on car windows, billboards, and the t-shirts of self-proclaimed “Zoo Freaks.” The creature was part of the logo for Dallas radio station KZEW, a station that provided the rock ’n’ roll soundtrack for a generation of locals in the post-Woodstock '70s. KZEW was a pioneer on the FM dial when there were few rockin' FM stations and those that did exist played out tranquilizing music for doctors’ offices. Life at KZEW was a zoo in itself. It was kind of like the Smothers Brothers on LSD had taken over a major broadcast facility, right in the heart of the Bible Belt. The jocks let loose with a diverse blend of rock music and didn't make use of a rigid playlist.
Description: Hitting the air in 1936, XERB was an early 'border blaster' station at 730 kHz on the AM dial. While broadcasting from across the border on Mexico's Baja peninsula, at Rosarito Beach, near Tijuana, XERB was operated as a Los Angeles radio station and packed massive power giving them coverage well beyond Los Angeles and the Inland Empire as well as most of Northern Mexico. As part of the North American Regional Broadcasting Agreement in 1941, the station moved from 730 to 1090. Description: Radio SydhavsØerne is a contemporary hit radio station from Nykøbing, Denmark. They also air specialty programming for 80s, disco and rock music, as well as a daily afternoon talk show. Not sure what the palm trees and tropical flowers have to do with Scandinavian radio, but hey, we're all seen weirder things, right?
Description: WMET originally hit the air on March 9, 1959, as WDHF, owned by Hi-Fi systems and record store owner James DeHaan. Its call sign stood for DeHaan Hi-Fi and operated out of DeHaan's store in Evergreen Park, Illinois with its transmitter and tower in Oak Lawn. The station was primarily an easy listening format and would eventually go to a Top 40 model after changing ownership a few times. In 1976, the station's call letters were changed to WMET, while retaining its top 40 format and by 1979 had embraced an album-oriented rock (AOR) format.
Description: From 1980 through 1986, Houston's KSRR operated as '97 Star FM,' as a largely top 40 station. Late 1986 saw the station relaunched as '97 Rock Houston,' and transitioned to an album oriented rock (AOR) format, using the slogan 'Kick Ass Rock 'N' Roll!' 97 Rock brought in national talent to host a new drive time morning show, and the station successfully competed against the AOR format stations in the Houston market to be the dominant FM radio broadcaster.
Description: 104 FM began broadcasting in the Twin Cities region back in 1962 and went through many format changes throughout its history, but one of the station's more notable eras was in 1986 when they went to a hard rock format. Taking on the Hot Rockin' 104 monicker, the hard rock format pushed them into the top 10 in the local radio ratings, though they were not very consistent with the harder format, frequently going back and forth between heavy metal and mainstream album rock.
Description: On November 8, 1968, classic music station 98.5 FM KXRQ emerged from months of silence as KZAP after being purchased by Lee Gahagan. The new free form radio station quickly found its groove and had an immediate impression on the large college crowd in Sacramento. Playing an eclectic mix of rock 'n roll music, KZAP was a very much a college radio station that appealed to a youth audience that had never really bought into the other commercial stations. The station remained extremely progressive, and was the first station in the United States to air a commercial for condoms and was an early adopter of Stereo Quadraphonic sound technology. When Gahagan unexpectedly died in 1972, KZAP settled into an album-oriented rock format.
Description: In 1908, the Sonora Chime Company of New York City patented its system of chiming bells for clocks, and the company began using the motto "clear as a bell" for their products. As time marched on, Sonora did its best to stay relevant, and began producing record players as the Sonora Phonograph Company in 1913. Throughout the Great Depression, Sonora saw rough times, but survived to emerge from bankruptcy in 1938 as the Sonora Radio and Television Corporation, and began producing radios. From stylish portable models to more traditional furniture type units, Sonora successfully positioned themselves as a premium radio brand at the upper tier of the market. Sonora radios became popular in France, and later much of Europe.
Description: In the early 1970s, many FM stations around the country were experimenting with free form music hosted by young disc jockeys, and New York's Capital District Region Q104 FM was one of them. In 1975, Q104 FM had gleaned their niche from the free form programming and began to air album-oriented prog rock. Two years later, Q104 FM debuted the fresh Q104 branding for the station, touting their 'live album rock' format, which continued well into the later years as the station began adding more traditional rock music into the mix.
