1977 The Loop Radio

WQXM 97.9 was a 56,000-watt FM stereo radio station that went on the air in December 1967 from studios at the tower site at 8320 Starkey Road in Seminole. The station was owned by FM Enterprises. Inc., and initially aired a classical music format, which was dropped in 1969 to make way for an elevator music format promoted as Stereo 98. A new transmitter boosted power to 100,000 watts in 1973. Plough Broadcasting acquired WQXM in 1975 and a few years later, the elevator music format was out, an AOR format was in, and the station was rebranded as 98 Rock. This design comes from the 1980 brand update, which was a common sight throughout the Clearwater/Tampa area on billboards and bumper stickers.

On March 17, 1981, First Media completed their pourchase of KBLE-FM, and flipped it to an automated Top 40/CHR format as "The Northwest's New 93 FM." On July 8, 1981, KBLE officially launched with live on-air staff. On April 2, 1982, the call letters were changed to KUBE, and the station became known as "KUBE 93 FM". Shortly after the switch to Top 40/CHR, KUBE shot up to the top 5 in the Seattle radio market ratings (occasionally reaching #1 in some books and target demographics) and would later become the dominant CHR station in the Seattle metropolitan area. KUBE primarily competed against two other Top 40/CHR stations in the Seattle metropolitan area, creating an intense rivalry between the three stations throughout the '80s.

96 Rock - Radio Station

Prior to 1980 "W4" was an album rock station most know for employing Howard Stern early in his career. He hated country music but stayed on briefly after the format change as 'Hopalong Howie' before ceremoniously quitting in the middle of his show live on the air.

WMET originally hit the air on March 9, 1959, as WDHF, owned by Hi-Fi systems and record store owner James DeHaan. Its call sign stood for DeHaan Hi-Fi and operated out of DeHaan's store in Evergreen Park, Illinois with its transmitter and tower in Oak Lawn. The station was primarily an easy listening format and would eventually go to a Top 40 model after changing ownership a few times. In 1976, the station's call letters were changed to WMET, while retaining its top 40 format and by 1979 had embraced an album-oriented rock (AOR) format.

On July 12, 1979, 48,000 fans packed Chicago’s Comiskey Park for a doubleheader that included a promotion involving blowing up disco records. The event devolved into a fiery riot when crazed rock n' roll fans stormed the field as part of an anti-disco promotional event when a local disc jockey took the field between games to destroy the records listeners had brought. Once the crate of disco records had blown up, the crowd chanting 'DISCO SUCKS' cheered uproariously and began taking the field. From there they began throwing records and cherry bombs, tearing up the field and stadium facilities and otherwise devolving into an all-out riot that ended up with the Chicago PD riot squad being called in.

WMMS 101 FM Cleveland Radio

Turtle’s Records and Tapes was a Southern USA retail chain, based in Atlanta, that specialized in selling cassettes, records, and concert tickets; in the latter years of the chain’s existence, it also rented movies in VHS format. Turtle’s was recognized for its trademark logo, an upright standing turtle with its neck twisted around in several coils as he attempts to look backward. It was known for its deep selection and one of the most varied video rental offerings in its markets before the arrival of the big chains such as Blockbuster Inc. In the early 1970s, many FM stations around the country were experimenting with free form music hosted by young disc jockeys, and New York's Capital District Region Q104 FM was one of them. In 1975, Q104 FM had gleaned their niche from the free form programming and began to air album-oriented prog rock. Two years later, Q104 FM debuted the fresh Q104 branding for the station, touting their 'live album rock' format, which continued well into the later years as the station began adding more traditional rock music into the mix.

LA's MAGIC 106 FM Retro Defunct Radio Station

San Francisco's Kamel 106 launched in 1977 as a powerhouse album rock station with a headphone wearing cartoon camel as their mascot. By the early '80s, they were one of six rock stations in the Bay area and sadly ended up flipping to a top-40 format in 1984.
