Rice Paper Tapestries

How obsessive is that?! Sometimes I take my camera to the kitchen before I start cooking - just in case some vegetable or fruit or other item inspires me before I chop it up and cook it. It was the rice paper's turn yesterday, I cooked a Vietnamese meal and looked at these lovely delicate rice paper discs and couldn't resist taking a picture before I dipped them into the water.

The Viceroy butterfly is an interesting creature, mimicking the coloration of the Monarch butterfly almost perfectly as a protection against predators, primarily birds. As children, my brother and I were fascinated with butterflies, moths, and other insects and had many reference books about them. One Field Guide to Butterflies (if I remember the title correctly) was a well-loved, well-thumbed paperback handbook about North American butterflies. The page about the Viceroy stated that Viceroys took on the coloration of Monarchs because Monarchs are bitter and the birds avoid them; Viceroys apparently taste good to birds, so they evolved a coloration that protects them. Monarchs are among my favorite butterflies - my brother and I collected butterflies and moths as kids, and my amazing Mom would mount them for us. We would find Monarch larvae and gather milkweed blossoms and leaves and watch them make their beautiful chrysalises and morph into these brilliant orange beings. I also was privileged twice in my life to see a major Monarch migration - tens of thousands of them descended on a wooded path near my home when I was about 10 years old - it was a stunning experience! A Dragonfly Salutes a Queen, watercolor batik on Ginwashi Rice Paper, by Conni Schaftenaar I drew the dragonflies and the Queen Anne's Lace flower with a Micron pen, then applied wax to protect those areas. After the wax was set, I went nuts with layers of purple and blue, adding some streaks of wax against each layer of color to create background grasses. Finally, I used the black Micron pen to offset the grasses and make them pop a little more, and in a couple of places I used a fun GellyRoll Glitter Pen.

Sycamore Tree Under a Blue Moon Watercolor Watercolor and Ink Batik on rice paper, by Conni Schaftenaar I recently saw this sycamore tree standing at the edge of a soybean field near where I live. I took a bunch of photos, then I used Photoshop to create my "moon behind the tree look" for reference (that digital collage is also on my gallery - I created that simply to be my reference photo for this painting, but liked it as a photo/digital enough that I posted that one, too!). The basic scene is drawn with a Micron pen on the rice paper. This is a very experimental piece for me in that I tried a different approach to the wax resist. Idea leuconoe, the paper kite, rice paper or large tree nymph, is known especially for its presence in butterfly houses and live butterfly expositions. It has a wingspan of 12 to 14 cm. The paper kite is of Southeast Asian origin, but can also be found in Northern Australia and Southern Taiwan.

White Poppies in an Evening Garden, watercolor batik on ginwashi rice paper, by Conni Schaftenaar. I've been working on several watercolor batiks on ginwashi rice paper, which is just lovely to make those blended backgrounds. And, note the golden flecks in the white flowers - that's some of the fibers in the Ginwashi paper in its natural color - love those little touches of gold! I drew the poppies lightly in pencil, then waxed those areas to protect them and spattered some wax across the whole piece - maybe those little bright spots are fireflies! Using watercolor paper in the background with night sky colors poured and tilted and blended; then painted rocks on mulberry paper and tore them out and mounted them. Painted black acrylic on a long-fiber rice paper and tore it into strips to glue down and create the large foreground tree. After all was dry, painted some mid- and background trees in watercolor and spattered white gouache for a light snowfall.

Neptune's daughter rides a great fish, followed by her dolphin attendants. Sometimes I like to step backward into my artistic past, but even then the computer takes part. This is my Suminagashi work, combined with computer. Sumi is Japanese water painting using inks, natural minerals ( soluble in water ), stylus, and I use a hand fan to move the medium. Sometimes if there is a nice wind blowing in the window, then nature lends a hand. The inks are ground in an unglazed ceramic dish, then applied with sable brushes onto unthickened water, then urged into concentric rings using a spreading agent, also applied using the tip of a brush.
