This image was taken from the old Wooden Pier looking across the river, past the fog horn towards the lighthouse on the end of Cambois Pier. The image has been converted to Monochrome to emphasise the drama.

The historical Fye Bridge over the River Wensum, Magdalen Street in the city of Norwich, Norfolk. Fye Bridge is just one of the many bridges over the River Wensum and whilst it has been rebuilt several times over the years there has been a bridge in this location since 1153.

An appropriately named narrow boat, hiding behind a fallen tree, moored by the River Stort in Harlow, Essex, UK. HDR created from one RAW file processed as three DNG files in Photomatix, adjustments in CS6 with some help from Topaz Filters. Nikon 1 J2 camera with Nikkor 10-30 zoom.

The design is based on my painting of a beautiful golden sunset. The sun is saying goodbye to the disappearing day, hiding behind the river until tomorrow.

One of the several branches of the River Itchen as it flows out of Winchester, Hampshire, towards the village of St Cross. This is one of Britain's much prized chalk streams and the Itchen is highly valued as one of the main ones for fly fishing. It starts life in mid-Hampshire and flows south to eventually meet the sea at Southampton. Chalk streams are havens for wildlife, the chalk base giving superb filtration and storage. The highest navigable stretch of the River Thames (except if you're in a canoe!) at Lechlade in Gloucestershire at the southernmost edge of the Cotswolds. Here, above Halfpenny Bridge, the river gradually becomes narrower and shallower. Lechlade, a picturesque market town is close to the border with Oxfordshire and has the first (or last) lock on the river (St. John's).Here too the Thames Path long distance National Trail is close to its start near Cricklade and the source of the Thames.

A boat (possibly steam) chugging up the River Alde at Snape in Suffolk. It's here that the river becomes tidal as it flows on past Aldeborough from which it takes its name - to meet the North Sea near Orford and for its last few miles becomes the River Ore. This is an important ecological area - a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) as well as being an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In 1588, 4 ships were launched from here to fight the Spanish Armada. Now we find sailing clubs!

This is as far you can take a river boat on the Thames. The scene is just above Lechlade and the boats moored in the distance cannot go further upstream for here it narrows and becomes shallower as it heads towards Cricklade. Just behind us is the roundhouse which marks the beginning of the now derelict Thames and Severn Canal which once allowed working narrow boats to travel further. In the distance is the spire of St Lawrence's church at Lechlade - a picturesque market town.

A digital sketch of sailing dinghies near Goring-on-Thames just above Cleeve Lock. This is where the River Thames makes its way between the North Wessex or Berkshire Downs and the Chiltern Hills - this stretch being known as the Goring Gap. A variety of boats are found here - launches, racing boats, canoes, kayaks - and sailing boats. Seen on a bright summer day on a walk along the Thames Path National Trail which stretches from Cricklade in the Cotswolds to the Thames Barrier.

The banks of the River Nile as it flows through Egypt between Aswan and Luxor. Palm trees bask in the late afternoon sunlight. The Nile has always been the lifeblood of Egypt as it passes through the Sahara Desert. The area immediately by the riverbanks is green and fertile, but just behind are the desert sands. Flooding has now been controlled by the nearby Aswan Dam which also provides electricity to the region. The image has an oil pastel finish - developed from my original photograph.

Across the river is the Berkshire bank of the river. After a sunny day it's now clouding over!

The view standing on Caversham Bridge, Reading, looking downstream on a bright and sunny afternoon. On the left a boat is moored at Pipers Island - the third smallest named island on the Thames. A little further on is De Montfort Island or Fry's Island, the scene of a trial by combat between Robert de Montfort and Henry of Essex in 1163. We can also see The Blade, Reading's tallest office block and the tall towers of some new apartments by the railway station.

On the far bank are found the warehouses and offices of world-famous port wine companies. In the foreground is a Rabelo - the traditional flat-bottomed rivercraft used particularly in the transportation of port wine. It is here at Porto that the river flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

Boats moored on the Beaulieu River near the coast of Hampshire. The river starts its life not far from here near Lyndhurst in the New Forest. It flows for a somewhat short distance to the sea passing through the village of Beaulieu from which it takes its name. A little further on it passes the hamlet of Bucklers Hard before meeting the sea on the Solent. At Bucklers Hard, not far from here, mighty wooden battleships were built, incluiding Nelson's favourite, the 'Agamemnon'.

A digital pencil drawing of the cottages which sit next to the swing bridge over the River Kennet in the heart of Newbury, West Berkshire. This is the West Mills area as once there were corn mills here utilising the water from the river to drive the millwheels. Here the Kennet Navigation is about to become the Kennet and Avon Canal taking boats to Bath and Bristol. To the right is Newbury's Town Lock taking boats eastwards to Reading and the Thames.
