Rothschild's Giraffe, Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi. Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya, East Africa. Feeding on Acacia late afternoon. Living in very few areas of Africa these giraffes are endangered. The population is potentially close to meeting the population threshold for Critically Endangered under criterion C, depending on the number of individuals, if any, that survive in south Sudan. There are only about 700 in the wild. They have similar markings to the Reticulated Giraffe but are characterised by unpatterned legs, which looks like they are wearing knee-high white socks. Maasai (or Masai) Giraffes, Giraffa camelopardalis tippelskirchi. Males Necking. Male giraffes often engage in necking, which can be to prove dominance or it can be sexual. They swing their necks in huge arcs using their heads as rattering rams. In young males such as these it is common for the winner of the battle to mount the other to show his sexual dominance. The Rothschild’s Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi) is one of the most endangered giraffe subspecies with only a few hundred members in the wild. (Featured in Animals of Africa, & Other Groups.) A successful program is being conducted in Kenya, to help save these amazing animals. The Rothschild’s subspecies is paler than other sub-species, the orange-brown patches are less jagged and sharp in shape and the connective channel is of a creamier hue compared to that seen on the Reticulated Giraffe. In addition, the Rothschild Giraffe displays no markings on the lower leg, giving the impression that it is wearing white stockings. They are also taller than other subspecies, measuring up to six metres tall (20 ft).
