The song dates back to the time of the Great Plague in 1665, or with earlier outbreaks of the Black Death in England. A rosy is a rash, one of the symptoms of the plague. Posies of herbs kept in a pocket was thought to bring protection against the disease. "A-tishoo! A-tishoo!" is the sound of Sneezing or coughing which was the final fatal symptom. "We all fall down" was what happened eventually.
