Hereford Cathedral Number of views as of 19th December 2017 = 280. Founded over 1200 years ago, Hereford Cathedral is one of England's finest places of worship. The current building was begun in 1079, after its predecessor was plundered and burnt to the ground by marauding Welsh and Irishmen 23 years earlier. This was not the only disaster to befall the Cathedral, for in 1786, the western tower fell, creating a ruin of the entire west front and part of the nave. Restoration work began in 1841 and the Cathedral was re-opened in 1904. The Cathedral's treasures include a rare chained library, whose exhibits include the Mappa Mundi, a map of the world dating from the 13th century, and a copy of the Magna Carta dating from 1217.
