The town was once known for its shipbuilding and rope making - and it is said that some of Sir Francis Drake's warships were built here. The earliest recorded mill here was in 1170. During th middle ages it was run by the local Augustinian priory but at the time of the Dissolution it passed into the hands of Henry VIII. It operated until 1957 sfter which it became derelict. However, following subsequent restoration it was re-opened in 1973.

Being flat-bottomed and with a shallow draught they could negotiate the shallower areas of the Thames, its estuary and the tributary rivers. Woodbridge is a picturesque town on the River Deben in Suffolk. The quay area is full of photographic opportunities and in the background here is the old weatherboarded tide mill. The Deben flows from on to Felixtowe where it eventually meets the North Sea.

A boat (possibly steam) chugging up the River Alde at Snape in Suffolk. It's here that the river becomes tidal as it flows on past Aldeborough from which it takes its name - to meet the North Sea near Orford and for its last few miles becomes the River Ore. This is an important ecological area - a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) as well as being an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In 1588, 4 ships were launched from here to fight the Spanish Armada. Now we find sailing clubs!

The beach at Aldeburgh on the Suffolk coast. A fishing boat is drawn up on the shingle with its paraphernalia scattered around. Aldeburgh, facing the North Sea, was once the home of the composer Benjamin Britten and now hosts a world famous international music festival at nearby Snape Maltings. The town, now a pleasant seaside resort was once a major port and shipbuilding centre until the River Alde eventually silted up, becoming impassable to larger ships. A sailing barge heading back to harbour under power after a day's work. Originally photographed off Blakeney Point with textures and tones added during processing to enhance the dreamy nature of the scene. Sailing barges or Thames barges were once the 'workhorses' around the coast of East Anglia and into the Thames estuary as far as London transporting a wide variety of goods.

It's late afternoon at the River Deben quayside at Woodbridge, Suffolk and the low sun is lighting the scene and casting lengthening shadows. Woodbridge sits on the tidal stretch of the Deben just before it flows into the North Sea at Felixtowe. The town was once known for its shipbuilding and rope making - and it is said that some of Sir Francis Drake's warships were built here. Now we find mostly pleasure boats moored here - and a lone gull flying in!

Looking over a meadow near the quay on the river Alde to the village of Orford in Sussex. This was an important place in medieval times as evidenced in the castle with its fine keep built by Henry II in 1165-73. This impressive polygonal tower is well preserved and inside has rooms and a maze of passages. Near the village is Orford Ness - a shingle spit which links to the mainland at Aldeburgh. The image has a digitally produced coloured pencil finish.

Boats moored at low tide on the River Deben at Woodbridge, Suffolk. Woodbridge is a pretty market town on the banks of the Deben, abouit 8 miles inland from the coast. It is at these lower stages of the river that it becomes tidal before entering the North Sea by Felixtowe. This area is ecologically important and is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It is also a Ramsar (special protection) site. Nikon D200 Nikkor 18 - 200
