Description: Friday the 13th is widely considered an unlucky day, combining two historically feared elements: the number 13 and the day Friday. The number 13 has long been associated with bad luck, partly because it follows the “complete” number 12 (12 months, 12 zodiac signs, 12 apostles). Friday also carried negative associations in Christian tradition, as it is believed to be the day of Jesus’ crucifixion. Over time, folklore, literature, and pop culture—especially horror films—reinforced the idea that mishaps are more likely to occur on this date. While many people treat it playfully, some still avoid travel, big decisions, or risky activities when Friday the 13th comes around. This art from 1948 even throws in a black cat for good measure!
Description: Friday the 13th is widely believed to be an unlucky date, a superstition with roots in both Christian and Norse mythology, as well as historical events. The number 13 is often associated with misfortune, possibly due to the Last Supper, where Judas, the 13th guest, betrayed Jesus. Fridays are also linked to misfortune, as the day of Jesus' crucifixion, the fall of Adam and Eve, and other biblical events. We're not sure what this 1940s era black cat is up to, but he's got a lucky horseshoe, so perhaps that cancels out the bad luck?
