The young Clare devoted herself to a life of prayer, penance, and charitable works, deciding to remain a virgin. Hearing of her virtue, Francis talked with her, and on Palm Sunday in 1212, Clare left her family home to join Francis in his way of life. Francis settled Clare and several other noble women who joined her at the Church of San Damiano outside Assisi. Pope Innocent IV approved a Rule Clare had composed, preserving the radical commitment to poverty, to which she clung throughout her life as a religious. Hers was the first such Rule, written by a woman, to be approved by the Church. The sisters are primarily contemplative, devoting themselves to prayer and supporting themselves by the work of their hands.

Saint Francis is one of most venerated religious figures in history. Pope Gregory IX canonized Frances in 1228. Along with St Catherine of Siena, he is Patron Saint of Italy & Patron Saint of Animals, ecology and the natural environment. Catholic & Anglican Churches Bless animals on his feast day.
