Deer Woman Pillows

In Native American folklore, Deer Woman is a shape-shifting spirit. She is a helper and protector of woman, sometimes aiding in fertility and childbirth. She also appears in human form at dances, and will lure men who are abusive to women into the forest, where she either gets them lost and leaves them for dead, drives them mad, or stomps them to death with her hooves, which she has even in human form. The border of this illustration is a pattern derived from traditional Ojibwe embroidery. "Deer Woman" is the fifth illustration in my Fairy Tale Fashion series.

You've become lost in a deep, dark forest.  Desperately searching for a way out of the woods, you come to a spot where the sun breaks through the canopy and cuts into the darkness.  Yet in that clearing stands an unusual sight.  A woman is there looking at you.  She carries a staff and wears a headdress of deer antlers...but wait… is that a headdress, or does she actually have antlers? Deer are a direct reference to the Buddha's first teaching in the Deer Park, Sarnath, also called Dharmachakra Parivartan. The suggestion is that so wondrous was the Buddha's appearance and peaceful his presence that even the animals came to listen. In the Tibetan tradition, a monastery which holds the Kangyur and Tengyur collections of texts would have this symbol of deer on both sides of the Dharma-wheel on the roof.
