Great Western Prairie Steam Locomotive Pillows

A black and white image of Great Western Prairie engine 2-6-2, number 5541 built in 1928 at Swindon and preserved on the Dean Forest Railway in Gloucestershire. This engine had undergone a nine year restoration and returned to service on the Dean Forest Railway on the 19th April 2014. Captured here on the first weekend in May in the spring sunshine, looking as good as the day she left the Swindon works over 85 years ago!

Ex GWR Large Prairie engine 5199 spent most of its working life in the Birmingham area based at Tyseley from 1934 to 49. It is photographed here in the Forest of Dean, visiting from the Llangollen Railway. The image depicts the engine as she would have worked, pulling a local passenger service on a branch line.

The GWR 5700 Class, or 57xx class, was a class of 0-6-0 pannier tank steam locomotive, built by the Great Western Railway (GWR) and British Railways (BR) between 1929 and 1950. With 863 built, they were the most prolific class of the GWR, and one of the most numerous classes of British steam locomotive. This locomotive was built for the Metropolitan line and originally worked on both its overground and underground lines. In 2013 it once again hauled passengers between Olympia and Moorgate as part of the 150th anniversary of the London Underground railway.

Great Western Railway pannier tank locomotive 3738 building up a head of steam before starting work at the Didcot Rail Centre. This engine, one of the 57xx class, was built at the GWR Swindon works in 1937 and saw service at the Old Oak Common depot. GWR Prairie Tank Locomotive Number of views as of 4th March 2018 = 800. Took a little trip down memory lane a few weeks ago aboard a steam train hauled by this GWR 4575 class 'Prairie' tank locomotive on the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire railway from Toddington to Cheltenham Racecourse. Number 5542 was built in 1928 at a total cost of just over £3600, and entered service in the Gloucester area, before being transferred later to Bristol, Taunton, Newton Abbott and Westbury. Withdrawn in 1961 by British Railways after completing almost a million miles of service, the engine then spent 14 years rusting away in a scrapyard before being acquired for restoration. Locomotive #1213 - Vale of Rheidol Railway, February 2020 The narrow gauge Vale of Rheidol railway runs from the West Wales coastal town of Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge in the heart of the Cambrian Mountains, climbing 700 feet along its 12 mile route. Locomotive number 1213, shown here at Devil's Bridge station, is one of three 2-6-2 steam-driven tank locomotives used on the line. All three currently carry the historic Great Western livery that they were originally delivered in. Built in Swindon in the 1920s/30s, each engine weighs 25 tons and is more than 8 feet wide (despite the track gauge being just under 2 feet). *Steam Up at Devil's Bridge, February 2020* One for the rivet counters! Locomotive number 1213 lets off steam at the end of the line on the Vale of Rheidol railway, Ceredigion (Cardiganshire), Wales. The railway runs from Aberystwyth up to Devil's Bridge, climbing 700 feet in 12 miles. Date: 21st February 2020.

Great Western Steam Loco 7029 Clun Castle

A black and white image of Great Western Railway Engine 2857 at Sunset. The engine driver is offering the single track working token to the Signalman who is just out of shot. Without the relevant token the train can't proceed along the single track sections. Engine 2857 was built in Swindon in 1918 and was in service until 1963. This class of engine (2800) was responsible for hauling most of the long distance heavy freight trains on the GWR / BR western region for almost 60 years!
