Always a Meieival Knights fan, I always loved the iconic crests and logos used by the various Orders. This is my redesign of the always cool looking German Teutonic Order circa 1500's.

Yes, I know what you think. This flag looks awfully familiar. Why someone would use Swiss flag - and got it wrong, by the way?! Truth is much more curious - this simple, yet dashing flag, is a banner of Holy Roman Empire until late middle ages, when famous, double-headed eagle succeded it. Originating in crusades period styling, it was flying high over one of Europe's greatest powers of the age. Wave it proudly.

The Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem commonly the Teutonic Order, is a Catholic religious order founded as a military order c. 1192 in Acre, Kingdom of Jerusalem. The Teutonic Order was formed to aid Christians on their pilgrimages to the Holy Land and to establish hospitals. Its members have commonly been known as the Teutonic Knights, having a small voluntary and mercenary military membership, serving as a crusading military order for protection of Christians.

Part of my Medieval Knight series, I present the Shield used by the 1500 century Teutonic Knights.

In the mid-17th century, outlawed Christians (mostly in the Nagasaki area) created statues of the Virgin Mary (Mother of Jesus) disguised as the Buddhist deity Kannon (Goddess of Mercy). These images, called Maria Kannon, were made or altered to look like Kannon, but they were not worshipped as Kannon. A Christian cross was sometimes hidden within the image.
