The 429 was NOT simply a 1 (or 2) cubic inch larger version of the blue oval 427 & 428 engines. It was a totally new engine from a different engine family. This design was a departure from the paradigm, utilizing thin-wall casting methods and a skirtless block to reduce weight. The Super Cobra Jet, rated at 375 HP, had a 4-bolt main block, a Holley 780 cfm 4BBL carburetor, and a larger mechanical camshaft. It was only available with a 3.91 or 4.30 rear axle ratio. In 1971, the CJ engine also used a 4-bolt main block. However, these engines were actually derated and produced power in the 440–460 HP range. This was done to deceive insurance companies (common practice in that era), so that buyers did not have to pay higher insurance rates.

Ask any knowledgeable blue oval enthusiast to name the quickest pure-production Mustang of the muscle car era, and most will say the 1968 Cobra Jet. It was packing a power plant based on the staid 428-cid big-car engine, but had larger valve heads and the race-brewed 427's intake manifold. It also had ram-air induction and a hood scoop that funneled air directly into a 735-cfm four-barrel carburetor. Output was an easy 410hp, but the factory rated it at 335hp in an effort to calm insurance agents and con drag strip rules-makers.

Super car with high technology

If you ask a well-informed fan of the blue oval about the fastest stock Mustang from the muscle car era, the majority will point to the 1968 Cobra Jet. This powerhouse was equipped with a modified version of the conventional 428-cid engine designed for larger vehicles, enhanced with bigger valve heads and an intake manifold borrowed from the race-inspired 427. Additionally, it featured ram-air induction and a hood scoop that channeled air directly into a 735-cfm four-barrel carburetor. While it easily produced 410 horsepower, the official factory rating was listed at 335 horsepower. This understatement was a strategic move aimed at appeasing insurance companies and deceiving drag racing rule-makers.

The 1967 model was redesigned with enhanced Coke bottle styling that featured Corvette-inspired front and rear fender bulges. The curves were the most pronounced with the 1967–1968 models. In keeping with federal regulations, safety features were built into Impalas during the 1967 and 1968 model years, including a fully collapsible energy-absorbing steering column, side marker lights, and shoulder belts for closed models. The L72 engine was not available in 1967, but a L36 Turbo-Jet V8 was optional.
