Newbury Bridge Pillows

The Town Bridge, or as it is known locally, The Water Bridge, crossing the Kennet and Avon Canal in the centre of Newbury, Berkshire. The River Kennet was made navigable from Reading to Newbury in the early 1700s under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury, work commencing in 1718. It was extended further west to Hungerford in 1798. The bridge probably dates from this period. The canal was finally opened to connect with Bristol in 1810.

The remainder of the length to Bristol was completed between 1794 and 1810 under the surveyor John Rennie.The canal fell into decline with the coming of the Great Western Railway. This image was captured late on a sunny February afternoon as the sun was beginning to go down. The Kennet and Avon Canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Kennet and Avon rivers and thus provide a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading and the Thames. It fell into disuse but has been completely restored and was reopened in 1990.

Here the Kennet Navigation is about to become the Kennet and Avon Canal taking us to Bath and Bristol. Behind us, Newbury's Town Lock leads us eastwards to Reading and the Thames.

The tranquil view from the towpath near the Weavers Cottages in West Mills, Newbury belies the once-bustling corn mills powered by the River Kennet. Hovis bought the mill in 1921, which was then sold in the 1950s. The tall granary building across the river stands as a testament to its industrial history. The swing bridge on the right leads to the town centre, while the mill's sluice gates can be seen on the left. The reflections of the mill buildings and trees on the calm water of the Kennet and Avon Canal.

A wooden footbridge taking pedestrians and cyclists over the River Kennet in Newbury, Berkshire. Here an arm of the river has left the main stream - the Kennet and Avon Navigation - and after passing through a sluice gate rushes along just below the main waterway with further weirs adding to it. The river, through the sluices effectively controls the level of water in the canal. The lock was constructed between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of local engineer John Hore. Behind the lock is Enborne Bridge, enabling the horses towing the boats to cross the canal as the towpath changed sides here. This image was captured one evening in early summer.
