Description: A scorpion stands above the compact COH PRAET inscription in dark earth pigment. The scorpion is associated with the Praetorian Guard, the soldiers who protected the Roman emperors. Uneven contours and worn gaps evoke the workmanship of an ancient hand-painted military mark. This original period-inspired drawing is a historical interpretation rather than an exact reconstruction of a surviving standard. Its transparent background lets the chosen product color show through; dark umber ink reads best on light colors.
Description: The Praetorian Guard was a force of bodyguards used by Roman Emperors. They also served as secret police and participated in wars. The title was already used during the Roman Republic for the guards of Roman generals since the rise to prominence of the Scipio family around 275 BC.
