On the same day Parisian experimental composer Pierre Schaeffer (Dustin Hoffman) coins the biggest philosophical term of his career, he learns that his wife, R. Murray Schaefer (Meryl Streep), is leaving him and their young son, Paul Shaffer (Justin Henry). Forced to raise his son alone, Pierre loses his job but gains a stronger relationship with the child with the help of another single parent, Pierre Henry (Jane Alexander). When R.
