The lift bridge over the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal at Talybont on Usk, South Wales. On the navigable stretch of the waterway between Brecon and Pontnewydd, this bridge is electrically operated by boaters. Here the canal is on an embankment above the village street, The Monmouth and Brecon Canal dates from 1799 and was part of a system combined with tramways to transport coal and limestone to Newport.

The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal as it passes through the village of Talybont on Usk in Powis, South Wales. This isolated canal which meanders through the Brecon Beacons National Park was originally designed to carry coal and iron to Newport on the Welsh coast. At present the section from the canal basin at Brecon to Pontnewydd is the only navigable part but plans are in place to eventually extend this to Newport.

Walking along the towpath east out of Talybont village by the Monmouthshire, Brecon and Abergavenny Canal in Powys, South Wales. Following the contours of the Brecon Beacons, the canal was designed for the transportation of coal and iron to Newport. For this to reach the boats from the mines, a system of tramways was constructed. The canal is once again open for leisure traffic as far as Pontnewydd and plans are in place to restore the remaining stretches near Newport.

The castle at Brecon (Aberhonddu) standing above the River Honddu close to where it flows into the River Usk. This was one of the first stone castles in Wales, built by Bernard de Neufmarche in 1093. The Welsh, however, destroyed the town in the 1100s and so a stone shell keep and outer walls were built by the early 1200s. The section in the image dates from c.1300. In 1645 Parliament captured the castle and slighted (razed) the walls to prevent future defensive use. A digital pencil drawing.

A narrowboat moored at Talybont-on-Usk on the Monmouth and Brecon Canal (known as 'The Mon and Brec') on a sunny summer afternoon. This peaceful canal winds its way from Brecon in Powis, through the Brecon Beacons and Monmouthshire to the docks at Newport, once carrying coal, iron and limestone. Now it's navigable only between Brecon and Pontnewydd but further sectioins are being restored with the aim of opening the entire length for traffic. This image is produced as digital art.

The Bear Hotel, Crickhowell, October 2021 The Bear Hotel is a historic coaching inn in the town of Crickhowell (Crughywel) just south of the Black Mountains and in the eastern part of the Brecon Beacons National Park (Powys, Wales). The inn was one of four stops for travellers en route from London to Ireland, and has been welcoming guests since 1432. Date: 29th October 2021.
