White American Pelican Peacefully Drifting by Debra Martz It was a beautiful, sunny winter day in February and this Pelican had separated from the larger flock that was busily feeding in the bay. This one chose to enjoy some peace and quiet by just lazily drifting.

A fun Pelican coastal bird

American White Pelican in Santa Hat

It is April and it is breeding season. Most birds change colors in plumage during this season or get additional features. The American White Pelicans grow a plate on the top of their massive bills and the colors of the bill become much more vibrant. American White Pelican Fishing Alone by Debra Martz I had been watching the Pelicans at the spillway for over 45 minutes with some fishing together and others alone like this one. The morning light plays an important part of the colors of the water. Only 18 minutes earlier the water was all solid gold during the golden hour; now only parts of the ripples are still reflecting that gold. Pelican Togetherness by Debra Martz When North America's second largest bird, with an average wingspan of 9 feet, flies in a tight-knit group like this, I wonder how they do it with such grace!
