Description: Lyu Surname Origins From the name of the ancient state of Lü, in present-day Henan province. Boyi (伯夷), a descendant of the Yan Emperor, had assisted Yu the Great in controlling the legendary great floods that plagued China for at least two generations. In recognition of Boyi’s contributions, Yu the Great granted him the state of Lü.
