Phone Cases
Description: Jonah Complex. This was drawn using a dip-nib-pen and india ink, along with liner pen. Like most of my drawings, it was unplanned; the image emerged as I went along. The title is an afterthought, and barely relevant. Were it not for the fish it might have been called something else.
Description: Enter, The Microdot Man. This was done in india ink, using a vintage dip-nib pen, on Studioline board. I don't think you can buy Studioline board any more, which is a shame, because it was a nice surface to draw on; it took the ink well, and you could do some scratching out. © Brian Benson 1989.
Description: Mind Cascade. I started it in 2017, using a brush-like Faber-Castell PITT india ink pen, and I've recently added a few marks with the fineliner-style pen from the same set. I've successfully resisted the temptation to do anything more to it. This is an A4 size drawing on white card. © Brian Benson 2019
Description: "What can he know... of the heart?" Marker and liner pen drawing on a postcard. Its title, if that's what it is, is a phrase that popped into my head whilst I was trying to think of something to call it (the picture, I mean, not my head). I wouldn't say there's any very strong connection between title and image. © Brian Benson 1993
Description: This is an india ink drawing from about 1992, approximately A4 sized. I did it with a dipping nib pen. I suppose it is about a kind of existential horror of life (and death)_ guilt-anxiety, fear of the loss of self, and a sense of being under psychic assault_ all filtered through a dark psychedelic perception and my admiration for expressionist woodcuts. As with most of my images, this was drawn directly on the page without preparation, or my having any preconceived notion of what I was going to do; so the above interpretation is more or less retrospective.
Description: Psycho Warrior by Brian Benson. This is an india ink drawing on A4 paper from, I should imagine, about 1998. At some point this picture has been trodden on. and elsewhere the surface of the page is uneven. Does anyone have any opinion as to whether or not I should have cleaned up the white space (I've left the page as it was for art prints, etc)?
Description: Pierced by Brian Benson, an about A5 size drawing. I used liner type india ink pens for this one. The image evokes an appearing grimacing face that becomes a receding landscape, parts of which_surprise, surprise_ form other twisted faces. A human figure in "magician's mysterious sleeves" (rabbits, dogs and the passing time) is pierced by a blow from the top right hand corner. Some kind of metaphor, no doubt.
Description: Weirdhead... This is an approximately B5 sized drawing on watercolour paper, in liner pen ink. I did a number of drawings in this vein of self-contained heads/constructions, at around this time (about 1994). I've tried to repoduce the placement of the image as on the original page, where I deliberately left the space at the top. I've cloned out some insect droppings and grubby marks.. I added my signiature and the date later on, the reason for which escapes me; I've made them fainter so as to be less intrusive.
