Yes, a student chose a vulture for their favorite animal! He turned out to be a challenge to paint in a quick 30 minute setting, so we decided to focus on his head and eye.

We decided to paint our wolves all in blue in the snow. The student who chose the wolf couldn't decide between a black footed ferret and a wolf, so I drew a ferret on the blackboard and painted him a wolf!
Another student chose seals as their favorite animal, and picked a photograph of a mama with her baby on the ice. What a great composition! I purposely left the baby without color in this two color study.
The student who chose this was like a lion with his mane of red hair, so we decided to paint him in tones of red and golden yellow. One of my very favorite birthday animals!
This was super fun to paint in a quick 30 minute sitting. One of my fourth grade students chose pandas as their "birthday animal." The kids loved painting their faces, especially the cub's. Two color study.
Quick two color study of a koala bear for one of my fourth grade students. He chose this right as the fires were raging in Australia, so it felt extra special to paint. This paper had some slumping and creasing, but I kind of like the effect.
This was also a birthday watercolor of a favorite "animal." In this case, a marine animal. I found jellyfish challenging to paint in a quick, 30 minute setting, but also very gratifying.
This was another birthday animal that I painted for a fourth grade student. We had a lot of fun with this one, and decided he looked super cuddly lying on his back! Two color study.
This is a double drawing across one board for Botany studies in fifth grade. I began with the sunflower, and added the fungi later. I liked the way they looked together!
I painted this fox for one of my students as a birthday gift. They each chose their favorite animal and we painted them together as a class and bound them into a book.
This is a detail from a custom needle felted birthday crown that I made for a little boy that loved lambs and bunnies. I have a detail of the bunny available too.
I drew this little guy on my blackboard as a birthday gift for one of my students. In fourth grade we study animals, and this was what he chose as his favorite!
Another fifth grade board drawing for Ancient Greece. This one took a lot of research and many different resources it to get to look just how I wanted. Super fun to draw in chalk on a blackboard!
I have a habit of hiding a little felt gnome in my classroom each week. My husband suggested I start hiding him in my blackboard drawings. Here he is peeking from behind a tree under the Super Moon.

The patron saint of all living things, greatest to least. Here he is, taming the hungry wolf. My students loved St. Francis so much that they chose to recite his "Canticle of the Creatures" for our Winter Performance.

The iconic scene of Martin slicing his cloak in two to give to a beggar on the street. It is this act of compassion that we celebrate at Martinmas in Waldorf schools.

It is sometimes hard to find strong examples of female saints. I loved Teresa because she showed that she was human and had moments of doubt. Here she is standing barefoot, shaking her fist at god and asking him if he treats all his friends this poorly. The sisters are looking on with horrified postures, worried that she will be struck down by the wrath of god.
St. Martin de Porres was a fantastic example of an enlightened human being who taught himself how to heal and care for others. Even the animals! This illustration shows him ushering the mice to a safe spot so they would not be killed by the friars.
The festival of Santa Lucia is very important in second grade in the Waldorf curriculum. The oldest girl in the classroom gets the honor of wearing the crown of candles and a long white dress. She walks from room to room with candles blazing, singing Santa Lucia and attended by the rest of class.

I created this mash up of a few different ideas to illustrate the 8 fold path of Bhudda for my students when we were studying ancient India in 5th grade.

St. George is almost the patron saint of second grade in a Waldorf school, as they are constantly battling their own dragons, and hopefully coming out on top!
