In Pieces

Living in a world of illusion. A little bit of humour to symbolise the ways in which we deceive ourselves. The ladders support us but the ladders are unstable, the ladders provide an illusion of safety, the ladders symbolise the society we live in which bear no relation to our place in nature.

The mountains are shaped in the form of images from past wars etched into the timeless granite, most of the images that make up the mountains are from famous war photos. Mountains also symbolise troubles that have to be overcome. In the foreground the three entertainers mess up their tricks, the magician loses control of the doves of peace, while the card trick is up another illusionist's sleeve but it spills everywhere wasted into the mud, and the third with the string puppet, has he committed suicide or is it murder? Has he shot himself or lost control of his puppet? They stand on the petrified body that holds a rose symbolising the hope of peace. The bog may claim them. Insane creatures, all have a role to play in the tactics of both armies. The armadillos have vacuum noses to suck up the tiny poisonous mites. One side are fantasy creatures with absolutely no logic to them the other are designed beings composed of part machine part living tissue.On both sides fight men.

Computer technology is a mixed blessing. My job as a graphic designer meant that I was forever being sucked into the minutia of computer software. Sometimes my computer seemed the only real thing. We observe the world through the neurone of a mother board and forget to connect with nature. When printing started to die thanks to new technology I tried designing websites but it was driving me even more insane with all its coding until one day I had the chance to look up and experience the world as it is. What's more I started painting again then I was able to sell my newly created artwork on... yes you guessed it, the internet. My message is: enjoy what technology brings but don't get sucked into it, the real world is out of that window ...

A weird but beautiful garden that dances with life.

This could have been titled The Money Eaters, it's based on the famous saying: 'When the last tree Is cut down, the last fish eaten, and the last stream poisoned, you will realise that you cannot eat money' The painting is a metaphor for environmental destruction. So when the last tree is left standing what's the best course of action? A corporation buys it, puts it on display and charges people for the privilege of seeing it. The sky is a polluted dirty orange beyond the dome, whilst inside the audience sit silently as witnesses in a court who won't speak, they are subdued with a light show of the creatures that might once have existed alongside the tree. It's an environmental metaphor. The game between the forces that would destroy our environment and the fragile environment itself. A chess game in which the pieces are being taken, one by one, while above the players heads the collapse is happening. The fishbowl, a symbol of a fragile life system, is kicked over by the greed of capitalism. Everyone for themselves. Originally an oil painting by Daniel Loveday.

Not quite knowing how they got here, Humanity mans the machine day in and day out; going in the same direction without stopping, never realising it's self-perpetuating, a cycle of consumption and the decimation left in it's wake.
