Description: Rice was cultivated in South Carolina, USA, in the late 1600's up until the Civil War. This cistern provided water to black slaves that lived on this island in the middle of the swamp. The photo's beauty belies the hardships faced by people who worked from dawn to dusk and endured are the dangers of living in such a hot, humid and bug infested area.
