Description: Ruins of St David's (1837) Port Arthur, Tasmania, Australia The church was constructed by convict labour, much of its interior joinery and decorative stonework being the work of boys from Port Puer. The wooden spire blew down in 1876 and the building was gutted by fire in 1884. Sections of the church were rebuilt and stabilised in the 1900's (from the Port Arthur historic Site guidebook). Description: Old Hill Street Police Station in Singapore. The building was constructed in 1934 as a police station with quarters for the police. During the Japanese occupation it was used by the Kempeitai to hold and, it is said, to torture prisoners. It reverted to police use after the war but after 1983 it has housed a succession of government Ministries. The building has gone through a number of renovations, but the original facade has been retained.. In 1998 the building was gazetted as a National Monument. The current building was opened in 1922, and is the third church built on this site, the previous church having been destroyed by fire on 28 May 1918. Plans for the church were prepared in 1919 by architect Frederick de Jersey Clere, who designed over 100 churches, mainly in the southern half of the North Island. Description: Murrumbidgee River floodplain in Gundagai, Australia. In the background is the one of the longest timber girder road viaducts in Australia (constructed in 1867 then reconstructed in 1898 and now in utter disrepair) and just visible behind it the longest timber howe truss railway viaduct in Australia (constructed in 1903 and now also on the verge of collapse). Both viaducts lead to bridges over the main river channel. All these works were constructed by day labour and supervised by the engineers of the NSW Department of Public Works and are listed on the Engineers Australia Heritage Register. Description: Alexandra Suspension Bridge is a 67m long footbridge (with a clear span of 46m between the towers) at Cataract Gorge on the South Esk River, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. The bridge was built in 1904 by contractors, the Salisbury Foundry Company, at the then cost of about £450 to a design by David St John, the city surveyor, who also supervised the construction. Description: Railway Station built 1924 as the terminal on the Korong Vale line servicing north western Victoria, Australia. The building is the only remaining example of what was a standard "Manangatang" style, Type C (1919) design. The "Manangatang" style design was used on cross-country lines of lesser importance; it was all timber and serviceable for a range of situations including goods only and mixed service. Description: Murrumbidgee River floodplain in Gundagai, Australia. This floodplain was the site of the original township of Gundagai that was wiped out by the flood of 25 June 1852. The cairn visible in the distance commemorates the destruction of the National School and the drowning of the Master & Mistress McKenna and their five children and also of the 82 other residents who perished - this amounted to approximately a third of the then Gundagai population, one of the largest natural disasters in Australia's history.
