The Torslunda plates, discovered in Sweden, are a series of images depicting various warriors and animal figures. They are dated somewhere between the 6th - 8th century AD during the Vendel Period. I've based my version off one segment of the plates depicting a warrior fighting two bears.

This design is based off of a panel from the famous Celtic/La Tene style Gundestrup Cauldron. The scene depicts a god with antlers-- often identified as Cernunnos-- surrounded by various wild animals. I've recreated this design in my own style as a hand-carved block print then printed it by hand in black ink before scanning the print to make it a shirt design.

This block print shirt design is based on a probable Viking raven flag. The raven is a symbol closely associated with Odin-- having two ravens named Huginn and Muninn-- and was further associated with war since Odin is the god of war. It's said that the sons of Ragnar Lothbrok in the Great Heathen Army flew a raven banner as well as other viking figures throughout history. I've recreated the image as a block print in my own style following some historical examples then printed and scanned it to make this shirt!

This block print depicts my own version of Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, in a Yule-inspired design. I've filled the hammer with knotwork motif and added some holly berries at the corners. The image is a block print which I carved and printed in black ink in my home studio before scanning to make this design.

This depiction of the Annunciation is based off the Gladzor Gospels. The Gladzor Gospel is an illuminated manuscript created in the 1300s in the Armenian region. The manuscript is a lovely piece of illumination and calligraphy with bright, vibrant colors. Taken from a larger image in the work, the figures here depict Gabriel telling the Virgin Mary that she will bear a child. I've recreated it as a hand-carved block print and printed it by hand before scanning it to make this design.

For this block print I have based my design of Tudor style embroidery. Many of the Tudors clothes were embroidered with sweeping vines and floral patterns. Here you can see a small bird perched among a flowering vine. Done in black and white it also reminds me a lot of Tudor style blackwork. I've recreated this bird motif as a hand-carved block print and printed it by hand before scanning it to make this design.

This hand-carved block print depicts the Ancient Egyptian god Thoth in his Ibis form. The image is based on an original illustration from a papyrus of the Book of the Dead created in the 19th Dynasty. He is holding a neb sign (a basket) with an ankh (the symbol of life) and two was scepters (a symbol of power or well-being for a deceased person.) I've recreated this as a block print and printed it by hand before scanning it to create this design.

For this hand-carved block carving I have based my design on an original image from Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae found in the Bibliothèque nationale France (National Library of France.) The image is a piece of marginalia depicting a Medieval king. I recreated this image in my own style and have printed this block by hand before scanning it to make this design.

This bird with roses is based off the Gladzor Gospels. The Gladzor Gospel is an illuminated manuscript created in the 1300s in the Armenian region. The manuscript is a lovely piece of illumination and calligraphy with bright, vibrant colors. This bird design comes from a small section of the front cover depicting birds among a series of roses. I've recreated it as a hand-carved block print and printed it by hand before scanning it to make this design.

For this hand-carved block carving I have recreated an original image from the Icelandic medieval manuscript of the Prose Edda. This image based on one from the Uppsala manuscript, Codex Upsaliensis. Here the king of Sweden, Gylfi, is speaking to three persons-- High, Just-As-High, and Third. In the manuscript he questions them and they provide a variety of answers for Gylfi about Norse mythology and the Norse gods. I have printed this block by hand before scanning it to make this design.

A highly recognizable Nordic symbol, this is the Icelandic magical stave called the vegvisir. According to the text from which this symbol comes it is meant to guide anyone who carries this symbol through storms or other bad weather. I have recreated this symbol in my own style from the Huld manuscript as a hand-carved blockprint which I printed before scanning.

This hand-carved block print of a frog is based off a woodblock print from the Edo era in Japan. Teisai Hokuba created the original, much larger woodblock depicting animals at a party. I isolated a small portion of the image showing just the frog and what looks to be a sake bottle and recreated it as a block carving which I then printed before scanning.

This hand-carved block print is based off a woodblock print from the 1700s. The book the original comes from discusses witches and their activities and has some lovely images throughout depicting witches doing various activities. One image shows a group of witches and devils at a feast (or sabbat) and I loved it so much I had to recreate it myself! I've doneit as a hand-carved block caving which I then printed before scanning.

This design is based of a talatat from Amarna in Ancient Egypt. Amarna was an 18th Dynasty city established by one of the most notorious pharaohs, Akhenaten. A talatat was a standardized piece of limestone that was used for construction and often decorated in beautiful imagery, sometimes relating to the worship of the Aten. Here the talatat represented a field of ripe barley, swaying in the breeze. I've recreated this as a block print and printed it by hand in before scanning it.

This block print design is based on the famous paleolithic cave art from the Lascaux Caves. The animal depicted here is an aurochs, a type of now extinct wild cattle. To create this I first hand-carved, then printed, my own block carving of this design then scanned the print.

According to a 2019 study from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego there is estimated to be 8.3 million pieces of microplastic per cubic meter of ocean water. And all that microplastic stays in the water to be consumed by animals-- and even eventually humans. When I read that study I couldn't stop thinking about those iconic images of sea turtles slowly making their way through floating ocean trash, only this time it was instead with an unseen swirl of microplastic following in their wake. I've attempted to capture that thought of an unseen pollutant swirling behind the sea turtle as it makes its way through the ocean. I printed this hand-carved lino print by hand before scanning it.

This hand-carved block print design is based off the Tanum rock art in Sweden. The petroglyphs are thought to be from the Bronze Age and depict a variety of items, animals, and people. Here I have recreated one of the images of a ship with what looks to be a sort of dragon head on either side. I have printed it by hand before scanning it to make this design.

A little fantastical colibrí (hummingbird) sits on a flowering thorn vine. Giant kelp in the oceans do not have roots. Instead what they have is a structure that resembles roots called a holdfast. (Another interesting fact: they don't have leaves either, they have blades!) When I first learned about kelp and their holdfasts I immediately thought of the words being formed by the tangled mass reminding one to "hold fast". I've printed this hand-carved lino print by hand then scanned it to make this design.

The ocean sunfish is such a fascinating fish! Known for swimming and basking flat along the surface perhaps to warm up from the sun (hence their name) they are the heaviest of the bony fishes-- growing up to 14 feet vertically and weighing up to 5,000 lb. They're almost like flat pancake fish with barely any tail fin to speak of. They can release up to 300 million eggs at a time and their hatchlings are so small that by the time they've reached adulthood they are 60 million times larger! I've printed this hand-carved lino print then scanned it to make this design.

The Eyrarland Image is a small bronze figure discovered in Iceland in the early 1800s. It's possible it represents Thor holding Mjolnir and for my version I've chosen to interpret it so while also adding a series of runes circling the seated figure. I've recreated this as a block print, printed it by hand, then scanned it.

Valkyries were female Norse mythological figures who picked from the slain in the battlefield to bring them to Odin's hall of Valhalla. In the archaeological record there are multiple examples of Valkyries, including used as brooches.
