Great surfbreaks of the world. The Wedge is a world-famous surfing, bodyboarding and bodysurfing spot located at the extreme east end of the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, California. During a south swell of the right size and direction, the Wedge can produce huge waves up to 30 feet (9.1 m) high. The waves are a by-product of improvements to the groin (rock jetty) on the west side of the Newport Harbor entrance undertaken during the 1930s.[1] When conditions are right, and a wave approaches the shore at the proper angle (most generally a south swell), an approaching wave will reflect off the jetty creating a second wave. The reflected wave meets up with the following wave of the set and forms a peak, and this pattern can repea...

Continuing series of great places to surf in the world. The surf break at Waimea Bay was significant in the development of Big wave surfing. Larger surf at the bay went unridden for years until November 7, 1957 [1] when a handful of surfers finally paddled out and rode the giant waves that break off the northern point of the bay. While the surf only breaks big several times a year, Waimea was the most prestigious big wave surf break in the world for decades. With the advent of tow-in surfing, more and more big wave breaks have been discovered that are far superior in quality to Waimea. However, the bay still holds a significant place even in today's world of big wave surfing. !http://www.llbutterworth.com/myartspace/teeth.jpg! ...

This is one of the best right wave in the world. Is the right of pipeline, but is a little bit slower, less powerful and a little bit less dangerous(cause there is more water from the wave to the coral reef). It works from three reef: from the first reef, it's not so dangerous, and is possible to be surfed by surfers with some experienced, from the second reef, you need lot of experience to surf it, and from the third reef it's so big and powerful that is only for pros or kamikaze!

‘Killers’ is the most consistent Tarhazoute pointbreak, sucking up all available N-W swells. It’s always bigger than it looks and the paddle-out takes close to 15mins at high tide. In small swells, at low tide, the peak in front of the cliff has a short left (heading straight into some rocky caves) and a sectioning right. As the swell increases, the take-off area moves south and powerful, vertical walls, rumble down the point. Occasional barrels and difficult to make sections. The inside fires at high tide as it’s fully protected from N winds. Handles a lot of size.

Maalaea is one of those "world's best" surf breaks that doesn’t sing to me. Too much wind. Too little water on the reef. Nothing but relentless, brutalist speed. Sam Hawk--Sam Hawk--made one of four at Maalaea. Owl, Hakman, Owens, Ho--every Hawaii-based surf legend from the Age of Nixon to the Summer of Azalea who flies to Maui with their afterburners primed gets shut down somewhere in the echoey misty vastness of that Chunnel-length tube. And reef-rolled more often than not, too. Limping back to the airport covered in Betadine, gauze and tape.

Barra de la Cruz sits behind the hills and isn’t visible from the beach, which is accessed by a typical dirt road. It’ll be easy to find accommodation around the village but it’s important to take useful items such as medicine with you, and above all keep in mind that the best season for waves is the rainy season so make sure you take lots of insect repellent. The advantage of this right is that it remains unspoilt despite it not being far from the tourist areas in Huatulco Bay. It’s currently one of the most important spots along Mexico’s Pacific coast and it’s relatively near, a little more than an hour and a half away from the barrels at Zicatela Beach in Puerto Escondido so the locals often travel there, however, if it gives the righ...

The Superbank extends from Snapper Rocks Point, through Rainbow Bay, Greenmount Point, Coolangatta Beach, and Kirra, for a distance of around 2 kilometres (1.2 mi). Multiple barrel sections can now occur at any point along this length. The quality of the surf in the first 4 of these sections has markedly improved since the 1990s, and is now of legendary quality, creating one of the longest, hollowest and best waves in the world. However, the quality of the last section, Kirra, which has long been regarded as one of the world's best waves prior to the formation of the Superbank, has suffered. There have been calls to modify aspects of the sand bypass system to attempt to restore Kirra to its former quality, although exactly how this is to...

Located along Namibia’s isolated and hostile Skeleton Coast, it’s not exactly what you’d call a holiday destination. The bay lies smack bang in the middle of the Namibian desert with only the seal colonies to keep you entertained. It’s hot. It’s cold. It’s dusty. There’s literally nothing else to do but surf. Get the swell forecast wrong and you’ll be sorry. Get the swell forecast right and you’re tube riding skills better be up to scratch.

Cardiff starts at the river mouth, flanked by San Elijo State Beach and Cardiff State Beach, and extends north to Swami’s Point in Encinitas. At extreme low tide, the reef reveals itself with tide pools, where plants and sea creatures reveal themselves for an up-close look. Cardiff is also home to the Cardiff Kook—a surfer statue that’s often criticized, and sometimes revered, as a parody of California’s iconic sport. WHERE TO GO Cardiff State Beach and its two reefs create excellent breaks for surfing, while its kelp beds are well-suited for diving. The Wedge is a spot located at the extreme southeast end of the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, California known for its large waves that makes it a popular spot for surfing, and for “body surfing” without a board in particular. The Wedge is the intersection of the beach and of the man-made jetty that forms the breakwater on the western side of Newport harbor entrance. When a south or south/southwest swell is running of the right size and direction, the “Wedge” can produce huge waves up to 30 feet (9.1 m) high.
