Description: Alan M Turing (1912 – 1954) was an English mathematician, computer scientist, logician, cryptanalyst, philosopher, and theoretical biologist. He is widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. Despite his accomplishments, he was never fully recognized in his home country during his lifetime, due to his homosexuality, which was then a crime in the UK. Turing was prosecuted in 1952 for homosexual acts; the Labouchere Amendment had mandated that "gross indecency" was a criminal offense in the UK. He accepted chemical castration treatment, with DES, as an alternative to prison. He died in 1954, 16 days before his 42nd birthday, from cyanide poisoning. #PrideMonth
Description: In the late 1960s, Howard was active in the movement against the Vietnam War. Like many other women in the US anti-war movement at the time, Howard became critical of its domination by men, and she soon became involved in the feminist movement as well. A militant activist who helped plan and participated in LGBT rights actions for over three decades, Howard was an active member of the Gay Liberation Front and for several years chair of the Gay Activists Alliance's Speakers Bureau in the post-Stonewall era. She is known as the "Mother of Pride" for her work in coordinating the first LGBT Pride march, which occurred in 1970. Howard died of colon cancer on June 28, 2005.
Description: Marsha P. Johnson (August 24, 1945 – July 6, 1992) was an American gay liberation activist and self-identified drag queen. Known as an outspoken advocate for gay rights, Johnson was one of the prominent figures in the Stonewall uprising of 1969. A founding member of the Gay Liberation Front, Johnson co-founded the gay and transvestite advocacy organization S.T.A.R. (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries), alongside close friend Sylvia Rivera. From 1987 through 1992, Johnson was an AIDS activist with ACT UP. Shortly after the 1992 pride parade, Johnson's body was discovered floating in the Hudson River. #PrideMonth
