They were formed by ex-Quiet Sun drummer Charles Hayward, multi-instrumentalist Charles Bullen, and tape manipulator Gareth Williams, who also played bass and keyboards. The trio set up their own rehearsal and recording studio in Brixton, dubbed 'Cold Storage', in which their music was recorded. This Heat (1979), their debut album, featured "24 Track Loop", regarded today as a pioneering experimental sound art composition. Deceit (1981) was a more song-based effort. Williams then left the group, however, and This Heat disbanded soon after. Hayward moved on to form Camberwell Now.
