At heart, I am an absurdist. In modern times, it's getting harder to separate reality from absurdity ... but that's a conversation for another time. In this piece, I wanted to marry two completely different worlds, each relatively absurd in their own way. Two worlds so distant from each other that when thrown together, they become utterly surreal. Honestly, the thought of Frankenstein's Monster and the Creature from the Black Lagoon earnestly competing in the Showcase Showdown on The Price is Right (in the 1970s, no less) simply makes me laugh. So I created it. But I wanted to do it right, so I added an absurd amount of detail.

I don't like when people call Frankenstein's Monster "Frankenstein." So putting a Price is Right name tag on him serves two purposes: 1) It reminds people that his name is NOT Frankenstein. 2) It's silly. (I like silly.)

Classic horror is often actually more melancholy than scary, and the audience has a tendency to sometimes end up relating to and feeling more for the "monster" as a victim than the people, and humankind is revealed to be in truth more of a monster. This trait in particular is the true art of classic horror and is rarely seen in modern films. In Creature from the Black Lagoon, this is the case when Gill-Man, an innocent piscine amphibious humanoid creature who was simply trying to live his life in peace, is attacked by frightened men ... a common tale ... especially metaphorically. As for the Price is Right nametag, that's just my little absurdist twist ... and a reminder that this monster's name is not "Creature."

For my Mod Pop Art tribute to the groundbreaking German silent horror film Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens, I created a dark, minimal 2-tone feel inspired by the grim but stark look of the movie and painted my rendition of three of its most iconic images, then combined them into one piece. To contrast the simplistic near-black brushwork, I created a vivid colorful graphic background with my signature gradient banding in yellow/green/purple, a Halloween-like rainbow of sorts. Then I fit everything nicely into an oval with a grainy vignette to sort of fuse vintage and modern into one look and tie it all together.

My favorite scene in Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens is the creepy shadow on the wall as Count Orlok ascends the staircase toward his final victim; it is one of the most iconic images in film and perfectly captures the ambiance of classic horror. In tribute to the simplicity of this still, I kept the artwork as minimal as possible. To contrast the near-black brushwork of the silhouette, I created a graphic background with my signature gradient banding in purple. Then I fit everything into an oval with a grainy vignette to sort of fuse vintage and modern into one look and tie it all together.

Shadow of Nosferatu (Monochrome)
I love the scene in Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens after Count Orlok bites Ellen Hutter's "lovely neck." As Orlok slowly looks up, with his twisted claw wrapped around the head of his victim, he stares directly into the camera for a beat, which makes for one of the creepiest scenes ever. As I often do, I captured my own still of this scene for reference and tried to pay tribute to the moment by painting in a dark, minimal 2-tone feel inspired by the grim but stark look of the movie. To contrast the near-black brushwork, I created a graphic background with my signature gradient banding in purple. Then I fit everything into an oval with a grainy vignette to sort of fuse vintage and modern into one look and tie it all together.

Who isn't spooked by The Shining? When the audience first sees the creepy Grady twins standing at the end of that long hallway in front of Danny on his tricycle, it's one of the weirdest and greatest moments in cinema. One of my signature art styles is to superimpose two images over each other, which I did here with the iconic carpet pattern in the hallways of the Overlook Hotel ... but this is perhaps the piece in which superimposition makes the most sense, considering the two main subjects are dead. And by dead, I mean ghosts. You know, because ghosts are known to be somewhat transparent. Boo!

The Shining Carpet Pattern
I love simplicity in many things, including art. This piece is inspired by not only the film Halloween, but also John Carpenter's brilliant soundtrack: simple but direct. I love the overwhelming feelings, emotions, and number of thoughts that can be conjured up by presenting a single simple image, like a knife superimposed over a mask ... a mask of William Shatner, at that (although if you're a Halloween fan, you probably already knew that). To get back to the soundtrack, true fans will know the title of this piece is borrowed from one of the many cool track names.

The Shape Lurks (Halloween)
Beetlejuice is a movie that as a kid I completely ruined on VHS by watching it over and over and over. Because of my love for this masterpiece, I wanted to go BIG; I spent over two full weeks completing not one, not two, not three - OK, you get the idea - I did TEN (10) full separate works. And this one here is what they call the ol' pièce de résistance ... the culmination of all 10 pieces combined. I like artwork that looks one way from a distance, and then reveals cool details as you walk up and take a closer look. I can only hope that fellow fans will enjoy my tribute - my love letter, to be more accurate - to Burton and the exceptional cast and crew of the wonderfully strange and unusual Beetlejuice.

It's Showtime! (Beetlejuice)
Remember the days when movies only used tangible practical effects instead of CGI for every single little item on screen? Beetlejuice in particular has many scenes that hearken back to really old school stop-motion animation effects, the same techniques that were used in classic action-horror movies like Jason and the Argonauts (1963), and even going way back to King Kong (1933). This is one of the coolest things about Beetlejuice, in my opinion, and this piece is dedicated to the scene where Barbara and Adam Maitland stretch and do horrible things to their faces in an attempt to scare the people who invaded their home after they died ... all done in beautifully weird stop-motion animation.
