Description: A sand dollar shell looks like a round white coin, which is where it gets its name. When they're alive they're actually a dark color, covered with short dark spines. These spines are moveable, and the sand dollar uses them both to move around on sea bottom and to push small pieces of food to its mouth. Just as the starfish has five arms, most sand dollars have a pattern of five sets of pores on them. Those are used to move sea water into the sand dollar's body, which is then pumped to aid in movement.

Description: Starfish (sea stars) are beautiful animals that can be a variety of colors, shapes and sizes, although all resemble a star. While some appear smooth, they all have spines covering their upper surface and a soft underside. Although sea stars live underwater and are commonly called "starfish," they are not fish. They do not have gills, scales, or fins like fish do and they move quite differently from fish. While fish propel themselves with their tails, sea stars have tiny tube feet to help them move along. Sea stars belong to the Phylum Echinodermata. That means they are related to sand dollars, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers. So here we have an abstract rendering by DeGroom of a starfish

Description: The island of Curaçao is located 40 miles north of the Venezuelan coast. The original inhabitants of Curaçao were Arawak peoples. Their ancestors had migrated to the island from the mainland of South America, likely hundreds of years before Europeans arrived. The first Europeans recorded as seeing the island were members of a Spanish expedition under the leadership of Alonso de Ojeda in 1499. The Dutch West India Company founded the capital of Willemstad on the banks of an inlet called the 'Schottegat'. Curaçao had been ignored by colonists, because it lacked gold deposits. The natural harbour of Willemstad proved to be an ideal spot for trade. Commerce and shipping — and piracy—became Curaçao's most important economic activities. In ad...
