Some of these animals became extinct around the time that humans first colonised Australia, while others survived until more recent times. The last known Tasmanian wolf died in captivity 1936. Recent studies have shown Archaeopteryx to be mostly dinosaurian in form, and a member of the group closely related to the ancestors of birds.
