Description: A colour artwork depicting a collection of Sir Nigel Gresley designed record breakers. Flying Scotsman, the first steam locomotive to be officially authenticated at a speed of 100 MPH in 1934. Papyrus, 105 MPH March 1935, Silver Link, 112 MPH in September 1935. Mallard is the holder of the world speed record for a steam locomotive at 126 mph in 1938. Sir Nigel Gresley set a post-war steam speed record of 112mph in 1959 and Bittern set a British Preserved speed record of 92.8 MPH in June 2013.
Description: A colour artwork depicting the steam locomotive Papyrus, the first steam locomotive to be officially authenticated at a speed of 105 MPH on 5th March 1935.This is the classic image of an LNER A3 Class locomotive. From 1928 to 1936 some A1 and A3 class locomotives had a corridor tender giving the crew access to the locomotive from the train as pictured here on Papyrus. This enabled it to travel from London to Edinburgh in eight hours changing the crew without stopping.
