Description: This illustration shown shows a collection of fossils of the first known macroscopic, multicellular organisms, collectively known as the "Ediacaran Biota". The organisms of the Edaicaran Biota are enigmatic, and their relation to living organisms remains a mystery. Among the organisms depicted here are many which will be well known to paleontologists, such as Charnia, Ernietta, Cloudina and more! These organisms are depicted in three colors, reflecting the three "assemblages" into which paleontologists typically divide the ediacaran biota: the Avalon assemblage, the White Sea (or Ediacara type) assemblage, and the Nama assemblage.
Description: This illustration represents the Pleiades, a star cluster located in the constellation Taurus. This famous asterism was of mythic significance to cultures throughout the ancient world, and has gone by many names, including: Mǎo (Chinese), Thurayya (Arabic), Krittika (Hindu), Messier 45 (M45), Melotte 22, and of course, the Pleiades (the seven divine daughters of Pleione and Atlas) in Greek.
Description: This illustration depicts three fossils, which were originally identified individually, but were ultimately found to be parts from a single, large animal: Anomalocaris! Anomalocaris was among the first of the great apex predators to swim the Earth's oceans. Though it was not overly large by present standards, back in the Cambrian Period it was a giant! Fossils of this famous animal have been found in rock formations throughout the world, most notably the Burgess Shale.
