We couldn’t think of anyone better to portray The Empress in our Ghoulish Edition of the card than a sexy, seductive vampiress. Above her head sits a crown of twelve stars, representing the twelve zodiac signs and signifying her connection to the metaphysical realm. She is positioned in an open space within nature to express her connection to the natural realm. The seductive manner of her body accompanied by the symbol of Venus around her neck suggests that this vampiress possesses characteristics of feminine fertility and sexuality. This is further embodied in the red shade of the chaise on which she sits. In her right hand, she holds an orb-shaped glass filled with the blood of her most recent victim. The blood represents masculine pow...

Temperance is a card that is known for representing balance, patience, and middle-ground. Everything about this card suggests the unification of dualities within oneself and within life, creating a harmonious balance. In our design of this card, you see a statue of an angel. They are made of stone, but they are also a fountain, thus water flows through them. This symbolizes the importance of balance between staying grounded and allowing yourself to go with the flow of life. The angel’s gender is androgynous, further representing the duality of humans and the importance of balance. The angel is also a symbol of the unification of spirit and matter. They are made of stone, though they embody spiritual presence, depicted through th...

The High Priestess is a card that is associated with intuition and the subconscious in its upright position. When reversed, it represents a lack of inner voice and repressed feelings. For this card, we decided to portray Medusa as the titular character. Here, Medusa sits upon a throne of her enemies who were turned to stone. These statues act as the “veil” that conceals what lies beyond. Her feminine beauty intertwined with her monstrous intensity represent her intuition, fertility, and divine femininity. Behind her throne on either side, we see two pillars. They are marked with the Greek letters “Π” “ά.” These are the first letters in the Greek spelling of Persephone and Hades. Hades is the God of the Dead, while Persephone is the Godde...

The Magician is a card that carries with it the ideas of new beginnings, manifestation or manipulation, resourcefulness and empowered actions or untapped potential. We felt that our edition of this timeless card would best be suited for Dr. Frankenstein. After all, in Mary Shelley’s famous tale, Dr. Frankenstein manipulates the natural laws of science and morality to bend the will of life and death to his own design. . In this card, we see Dr. Frankenstein in the role of The Magician. He stands in the center of his laboratory with one hand in the air wielding a lightning rod while his other hand is pointed toward the ground. This represents the important aphorism that expresses the idea that everything in the universe is connected. Thi...

⚖️ Justice is a card symbolizing truth and fairness in its upright position while representing dishonesty and a lack of accountability in its reversed position. For this card, we decided that the Grim Reaper would be the best representation of unbiased justice. . ☠️The Grim Reaper is a symbol of death, yes, but he is not the decision-maker. He does the bidding of the universe, coming for people only when their time on Earth is through. He is a blind symbol of the universal law and order of life and death. . ??Here, he sits on a throne in front of a tattered purple veil that is hung between two pillars. The color purple signifies compassion, and the pillars signify balance and structure. . ⚔️In his right hand, he holds a double-edge...

The World is a card that is known for symbolizing integration, travel, completion, and adversely it represents delays and seeking a sense of closure. For this design, we felt that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde suited the narrative beautifully and made for a compelling visual story. In our version, The World shows Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde during their transition. In the center of this design, we see Dr. Jekyll passing through a portal created by the potion in his hand. On the other side lies Mr. Hyde. The circular shape of the potion portal represents the cycle of new beginnings and completion. As Dr. Jekyll moves through the circle by drinking the potion, he is immediately transitioning into a new phase. Around the transitioning Dr. Jekyll and ...

Inspired by our reverence towards the Goddess Hecate and our love of tarot, this design includes major imagery associated with this Greek goddess of magick. Behind the Hecate Triformis, you’ll see the Triple Goddess Moon in which Hecate’s Wheel can be found. Notice the crossroads at which she is placed. Hecate is known for helping those who call upon her to make decisions and find their way. And an image of Hecate is not complete without her hounds, of course.

Morgan Le Fay takes centerstage in this rendition of the Major Arcana tarot card The Hierophant. As the apprentice of Merlin, she is learned in the traditional methods of witchcraft & sorcery. The pentagrams symbolize her ability to use light & dark magic. Four sunflowers grow from the grass symbolizing the elements of nature. Rhiannon's nakedness signifies her purity. This is further represented by the color of her steed and birds. This wiccan design features our favorite Egyptian cat goddess & protector of the home, Bastet. Also known as Bast, she is viewed as the passive feline goddesses, as opposed to her outwardly aggressive counterpart, Sekhmet. Although she is characterized as the gentler feline goddess between the two, Bastet's strength lies within herself and makes her a perfect characterization for this card. If you love tarot, witchcraft & wicca magick, this will make a great gift for witches.

A witchcraft altar replaces the scene of the original Major Arcana tarot card The Sun. The centerpiece of the altar features a witchy sun engraved into a wooden table. A voodoo doll is placed on the altar, but it has yet to be pierced. This scene symbolizes the positive feelings one gets when revenge is within reach. The four dried sunflowers represent the suits of the Minor Arcana. The unpierced doll symbolizes his innocence. This is perfect for New Orleans witches & Samhain.

This witchy, ethereal design features the future Goddess of the Underworld, Persephone. This Major Arcana tarot card has been re-imagined with the maiden goddess Persephone as she represents the essence of The Fool due to her naivete which leads to her abduction by Hades. As Greek mythology tells us, Persephone was picking flowers during the season of spring when a chasm in the ground beneath her opened up. Hades emerges from the smoke below with plans to kidnap the naive maiden goddess. A parrot attempts to warn her of the dangers ahead, but it is to no avail to the oblivious woman. Mount Olympus stands tall above the clouds symbolizing the obstacles the young woman will need to overcome in order to become the respected goddess we know...

We love the shudder these mysterious wooden puppets give us, so it’s no wonder we decided to include one in our Major Arcana designs. Our version of The Hanged Man is based off the Rider-Waite deck, but depicts this curious character hanging by his strings on a beautiful, yet dilapidated and cobweb-infested stage. He is hanging upside down as he looks upon the world from a fresh point of view. His face is calm as he hangs. He has come to the position due to his own choices and is content in his placement there. “Normal” is a relative concept to the Hanged Man. He accepts reality as it is. Around his head, we see the “halo” cast by the spotlight. This symbolizes the Hanged Man’s newfound enlightenment and cognizance due to his new p...

This wiccan design features the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite. She emerges from the clouds above and lovingly blesses the couple below. She wears a white dress and a crown of roses, both alluding to her connection to love and purity. In the foreground, you see the idealized man and woman. This symbolizes the temptation one can have, subsequently taking away one's focus from the divine. The tree behind the man burns with twelve flames representing each of the twelve zodiac signs.

In our interpretation of Rider-Waite’s The Tower, you’ll see a massively towering and twisted tree as the focus of this card. As lightning strikes the tree, we see two specters fleeing away from the chaos toward the ground with their arms outstretched. This scene inspires a sense of unsettling and chaos from the viewer. We chose a tree to represent the tower as it is a solid and reliable natural structure, however its roots are twisted through the shaky foundation of skulls that you see at the bottom of the card. Though this tree seems impervious to destruction, a simple bolt of lightning has the power to bring down its twisted bows and send its inhabitants fleeing for safety. The lightning represents a divine or celestial jolt of ene...

The Moon shows a full moon high in the sky; however, our version shows the face of a jack-o-lantern in keeping with the Halloween theme. The moon is a symbol of the unconscious mind and intuition. Because the moon's light is dimmer than that of the sun's it can only light the path to higher consciousness, represented by the water that winds between the two trees. In the foreground, you'll see a small crab edging its way from a pool of water. This represents the beginning stages of consciousness developing. Straddling the path of water stands a wolf-man in the midst of transitioning. This imagery, as well as his straddling the path, represents both the tamed and wild aspects of the mind. On either side of him, you'll see the same twisted ...

The Emperor is often considered the patriarch of a tarot deck. It is a card that stands for strength and authority, displaying his power and dominion through position and symbolism. Therefore, we could think of none other than the King of Halloween himself, Dracula, to portray such an important figurehead. Here, he is positioned on a throne adorned with rams’ heads to symbolize his connection to the zodiac Aries and the god of war. As Renfield repeats multiple times in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, “The blood is the life!” The Emperor is seen holding an orb-shaped glass of fresh blood to represent the world and life over which he presides. This is further solidified by the ankh (the Egyptian symbol of life) that he wears around his neck...

The Goddess of the Hunt and the Moon, Diana, is featured in this rendition of the Major Arcana tarot card. She leaps in the air, in pursuit of the hunt with her stag by her side. Diana lets her arrow fly, as she protects this forest from casual onlookers. Diana's bow is in the shape of a crescent moon. This symbolizes her connection to the stars and all things celestial. Two cypress tress flank the goddess. One vivacious while the other withers. A layer of fog and forest of trees conceals what lies beyond.

In this rendition of the Major Arcana tarot card The Empress, the Greek goddess Gaia sits in a field of roses, aster flowers, and wheat. She is beautiful and full figured. Twelve aster flowers grow in her hair to show her connection to the stars. Open and eaten pomegranates lie in front of the goddess. She is also expecting. Both of these are symbols of the goddess's fertility. The waterfall nourishes the plant life seen in this illustration and signifies Gaia's vital connection to Mother Earth.

A revival of the traditional The Magician tarot card is illustrated here. The magician uses the tools at his disposal -- swords, wands, cups, and pentacles -- to realize and accomplish his goals. He takes spiritual and manifests it into something tangible. An infinity symbol hovers above his head and an ouroboros acts as the magician's belt; this represents the magician's infinite potential. The greenery and vegetation symbolize the abundant ideas and desires the magician conjures.

In this spooky rendition of The World tarot card, we see a petrifying specter passing through an ornate mirror from our world to the next. The mirror's oval shape signifies the cyclical nature of life & death, as does the ghostly figure looming before us. In each corner hangs an image of a cherub, an eagle, a bull, and a lion. These illustrations represent the four fixed signs of the zodiac Aquarius, Scorpio, Taurus, & Leo. They bring stability to this apparition as she passes from one realm to the next.

This isn’t our first go-around with redesigning The Chariot. It’s one of our favorite cards as it represents action, determination, willpower, and success (upright, at least)! In our Ghoulish Edition of this card, you’ll see one of our favorite Halloween icons, the mummy! Because the charioteer is about taking action, he stands rather than passively sitting. He is completely in charge of his situation here. The traditional crook and flail have taken place of the wand as the Mummy’s symbols of power. The stars above him signify his relation to divine understanding. The black and white sphinxes that sit before him represent the duality within oneself, negative and positive, that sometimes aid each other and sometimes act as opp...
