Samson Gorilla • Milwaukee County Zoo • MKE WI: Growing up during the 1980s,every kid in Milwaukee remembers Samson, a male silverback western lowland gorilla. He was given to the city’s first zoo in Washington Park by the Pabst Brewing Company. Samson lived his life alone in a glass enclosure, often hitting the windows of his prison in frustration. Reaching a weight of 652 lb., Samson managed to break the glass four times. His taxidermy carcass continues to be encased in a glass enclosure, sealing Samson’s eternal fate. His design included three domes to open to the public in this order: The “show” dome featuring seasonal plants and special exhibitions in 1965; The tropical dome in 1966; and The arid (or desert) dome in 1967. To this day, many consider the three domed structures to be the gem of Milwaukee’s public parks system. First Lady, Claudia Alta aka “Lady Bird” Johnson dedicated the seasonal dome in September of 1965. Milwaukee County Stadium • Milwaukee, WI: Milwaukee County Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium. Opened in 1953, it was primarily a baseball park for Major League Baseball's Milwaukee Braves and later the Milwaukee Brewers. If you were lucky, you might've scored a couple Packer tickets back in the day. The National Football League's Green Bay Packers played 2 or 3 home games per year at County Stadium from 1953 to 1994. Hank "The Hammer" Aaron hit his 755th and final home run on July 20, 1976 at County Stadium. This stood as the career home run record for 31 years until broken by Barry Bonds* in 2007.
