Description: An early Sugar Coma illustration from 2013, created before the project evolved into a full band. Inspired by the playful horror and candy coated surrealism of Junko Mizuno, the drawing blends cuteness and transgression into a theatrical portrait of performance, identity and chaos. Although it was never used at the time, I'm happy to finally give it a second life here
Description: Miss Congeniality is a tongue in cheek drawing of feminine performance, punishment, and resilience. Bound to a stake with a crooked crown still perched on her head, defiantly lighting a cigarette in the flames as she smiles. Blending beauty, camp and dark humor this design explores the impossible expectations placed on women and the absurdity of being condemned for refusing to fit them.
Description: Saint Britney is a fusion of the Pop Princess and classical religious symbolism. This design reimagines Britney Spears as a martyr, adorned with a crown of thorns as a nod to the weight of her fame and the crucifixion by her family/media. Centered on her chest is the Immaculate Heart of Mary to represent her vulnerability and perseverance she has maintained throughout her struggles. Saint Britney serves as a commentary on the deification of celebrity and what it cost her. Portraying Britney Spears as a complex woman who survived many tragedies. This is done with the utmost respect. Britney died for our sins.
Description: The Origin of Love is one of my favorite songs from Hedwig and the Angry Inch (if not my favourite song ever). It tells the story of a soul split in two, forever searching for its missing half. I've always connected deeply to this not necessarily as a search for another person, but as a lifelong search for myself. So much of my work returns to fractured femininity, identity, and transformation. I don't believe we become someone new. I think we uncover the person who was always there beneath the expectations, the shame, and the roles we were taught to play.
Description: I recently came across this sketch. I drew it around 2017, at the beginning my Drag/music project, Sugar Coma. It was artwork for a series of acoustic demos I completely forgot about. This drawing I believe captured a version of myself that I was still trying to understand. The drawing borrows imagery from Sleeping Beauty, using the fairy tale as a metaphor for where I was emotionally at the time. Instead of an enchanted bed, the princess lies on a stained, lonely mattress, with an acoustic guitar nearby. The only suggestion that there might still be a voice waiting to wake up. It was my way of contrasting the fantasy of childhood with the reality I was living.
