Description: Throwing it way back with this Rolling Acres Mall 1970's logo. Rolling Acres mall opened in Akron, Ohio with Sears and 21 stores on August 6, 1975. JCPenney opened a year later as a second anchor. A new wing was added in 1977, including a third anchor store, Montgomery Ward. Further expansion in 1978 added a new two-story wing called the Promenade, which included a food court called “Prom-N-Eat” (later renamed “Picnic Place”) and local chain O’Neil’s as a fourth anchor. The mall was foreclosed in June 2016. As of October 2016, demolition of the mall had begun with full demolition on the property expected to be complete by October 2017.
Description: Where shopping is always a pleasure. Caldor Inc., launched in 1951, was a leading retailer of upscale discount goods in the northeastern US. Caldor expanded rapidly beginning in the early 1980s to become the fifth largest discount chain in the nation by the early 1990s. The company sold nearly $2.5 billion worth of goods and employed a work force of more than 20,000 in 1994. A discount industry pioneer, Caldor predates the start of both Kmart and Wal-Mart by more than a decade. Despite its successes, Caldor suffered from financial issues in its later years and the company was liquidated in 1999.
Description: Steak, Prime Rib, and Lobster...Oh My! Steak and Ale was founded in Dallas, Texas, in 1966. It started as an independent restaurant chain offering an upscale steak experience at lower prices, and remained an independent chain until 1976. Steak and Ale grew to its height in the late 1980's with 280 locations. In 2008 the company behind the Steak & Ale chains filed for one of the largest restaurant bankruptcies ever and the chain's remaining 58 locations were closed as part of the bankruptcy proceeding.
Description: Be at the height of fashion with this retro 80s style Paul Harris Logo shirt. Paul Harris Stores, Inc. was incorporated on April 8, 1952. In 1954 the company's first store was established in a strip mall in Plainfield, Indiana. In the early 1960s, the company felt that the future of retailing would be in covered shopping centers (otherwise known as malls). The first Paul Harris Store located in a mall was in Akron, Ohio. Paul Harris Stores went bankrupt in 2000.
Description: Fisher's Big Wheel was a discount department store chain. It was formed in 1939 following the consolidation of the Fisher Dry Goods company and a hardware store called Big Wheel. Fisher's Big Wheel was primarily located in smaller towns which were not already served by other discount retailers. At its peak, the chain comprised more than 100 stores in 8 states. The chain declared bankruptcy in 1993, selling some stores and closing others. Fisher's Big Wheel closed in 1994.
