Holbein the younger started painting this portrait of Thomas More on the eve of his arrest and imprisonment in the Tower of London under the rule of Henry VIII. Since he had his head chopped off, More obviously never had the chance to see the final result, Holbien subsequently decided to name it "Happy Days".
