HUNTSVILLE, AL - Starting from the torch monument in Downtown Huntsville, runners strutted south along Highway 431 with the goal of reaching Guntersville without ever needing to walk. Unfortunately, many did not succeed.
"It really didn't seem that far," said one participant who fell short of her goal by 8 miles. "I was able to strut at a good pace for the first 15 or 20 miles but by the time I reached New Hope it was a different story. I was half dead! I couldn't run anymore. I experienced a shortness of breath and my movements were reduced to a sulking stagger."
Channel 19 News field reporter Jamey Tucker caught up with another participant as he was leaving in his Mercedes-Benz. "I had just gotten off work on Redstone Arsenal and I wanted to run...I wanted to run! It was supposed to be good but the guy that was walking right behind us to see how far we could run had the last laugh. We were so goddamned f***ing tired we could hard hold ass up."
