Description: Broken Hill is a frontier mining town in the far west of New South Wales, in the Australian outback. Known as the Silver City, Broken Hill is situated on one of the world’s richest deposits of silver, lead, and zinc ores. The town sits in a hot and subarid region, and like most places in Australia's vast outback, breaking down between here and there can be a case of life and death for the unprepared. Thankfully, towing operations like Outback Towing provide 24-hour rapid service to retrieve folks who find themselves stranded on the highway due to mechanical breakdown or those who venture a little too far off-road and find themselves stuck in the red silt that covered the region, Outback Towing can get travelers back on the road in no time.

It was now on display for millions of drivers that came off the Mercer Street exit from I-5 and became a fixture for decades to come. of course, long gone is the old towing yard at the end of the Mercer Street exit, but this bubblegum pink tow truck with five toes on top can still be found, though you'll need to visit the Museum of History and Industry to catch a look.

Description: Ernest Holmes Sr. was a mechanic in Chattanooga, Tennessee who is credited with inventing the tow truck in 1916. After helping a friend recover his car using three poles, a pulley and a chain hooked to the chassis of his 1913 sedan, Holmes realized that his contraption could be useful beyond just this one need. After refining his invention, Holmes began manufacturing what we now know as the traditional tow truck or wrecker, receiving a patent on his design in 1918. Holmes sold both turn key tow trucks and the wrecker body as a bolt on unit to auto shops, racetracks, and garages, and went on to design a multitude of tow truck offerings, covering just about every recovery need, including heavy-duty use by the U.S. military.
