The Memphis Showboats were an American football franchise in the United States Football League. They entered the league in its expansion in 1984 and made the 1985 playoffs, losing in the semifinal round to the Oakland Invaders. Perhaps the most prominent players on the Showboats' roster during their two seasons of existence were future Pro Football Hall of Fame member Reggie White and future professional wrestler Lex Luger.

he World League of American Football, described by The New York Times as the "first trans-Atlantic major sports league", began play on March 23, 1991. The league's first championship game – World Bowl I – drew 61,108 fans to London's Wembley Stadium on June 9, 1991. But attendance and television ratings on ABC and the USA Network were a disappointment in the United States. NFL owners voted to shut down the WLAF after two seasons in 1992.

The Omaha Mustangs were a professional American football team based in Omaha, Nebraska. They began as an independent, semi-pro team in the early 1960s before joining the Professional Football League of America, a newly formed league based on remnants of the United Football League, in 1965. Omaha moved to the Continental Football League for the 1968.

Brief two-season entry in the World League of American Football (WLAF), the NFL’s abortive early 90’s effort to create a springtime developmental league. In the past, Birmingham had been unusually receptive to not-quite-the-NFL brands of pro football. The WFL’s Americans and Vulcans and the USFL’s Stallions all attracted relatively strong crowds to Legion Field in the 1970’s and 1980’s.Fire

The Baltimore Brigade were a late-era entry in the now-defunct Arena Football League. The Brigade played during one the league’s darkest eras, when the once sprawling national league was reduced to a tiny cluster of survivors in the northeastern U.S. During the AFL’s final three seasons, the league owed its existence largely to the patronage of Ted Leonsis, the billionaire owner the NBA’s Washington Wizards and NHL’s Washington Capitals. Leonsis invested in the league in 2016, establishing two 2017 expansion teams – the Brigade and the Washington Valor – at a time when the AFL had just three other viable franchises.

The Jersey Jays were a professional American football team based in Jersey City, New Jersey. They began play in 1969 as a member of the Continental Football League, and were a farm team of the NFL's Cleveland Browns. The Jays played their home games in Newark Schools Stadium in 1969.

The Indianapolis Capitols were a professional American football team based in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Capitols started play in 1968 as members of the Continental Football League and played their home games at Bush Stadium. The team won the COFL championship in 1969, the final season of the league. On April 4, 1970, with the future of the COFL uncertain, the Capitols moved to the rival Atlantic Coast Football League.

The Birmingham Vulcans were a pro football franchise in the World Football League (1974-1975) that existed for just a dozen games in the summer and early fall of 1975. The Vulcans were a replacement for the WFL’s Birmingham Americans franchise, which won the inaugural World Bowl championship game in the fall of 1974 and proved to be a pretty popular box office attraction at Legion Field. But Americans owner Bill Putnam spent himself into oblivion paying out signing bonuses to NFL stars such as L.C. Greenwood and Ken Stabler to join the Americans in future seasons after playing out their NFL deals.

The Boston Sweepers were a semi-pro football outfit that drew crowds of a few thousand per game on the northern outskirts of Boston during the mid-1960’s. The team formed in 1962 as a semi-pro entry in the New England Football League. Press accounts alternately referred to the team as the Boston Sweepers, Chelsea-Everett Sweepers and Nu-Way Sweepers that fall. The latter name derived from team owner Ted Barron’s Nu-Way Disposal Service business.
