This image was taken on a cold, clear December morning as the rough seas were splashing around the stack, (and over the shoes of the photographer!) and then converted to black and white to emphasise the drama.

There is also a cormorant on the top of the stack drying its wings after a morning's fishing.

I enjoyed painting this view, and especially all the strata in the rocks. It comes from Lulworth Cove on the Jurassic coast in Dorset, UK. Most visitors flock to the circular cove that gives the place its name, or head the other way from the large carpark, over the hill to the rock arch of Durdle Door. This view though is Stairhole - a rock formation between the two, where a sloping wall of rock allows the sea in through a few holes (two are shown here). Its a popular spot for adventurous types who play in the water and climb on the rocks, and also with geology students, but on a rough day like this it can be deserted. Piracy Point Overlook in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

Stair Hole Number of views as of 5th July 2016 = 300. Stair Hole (near Lulworth Cove on the Purbeck coast in Dorset, England) is a partially formed cove which may expand to be as large as its neighbour, Lulworth Cove, in a few tens of thousands of years time perhaps. Stair Hole is something of a geologist's dream. See how the limestone strata to the left of the Hole have 'crumpled', probably as a result of earthquake activity many thousands of years ago. It is also popular with canoeists who like to paddle through the rock arches which have formed as a result of the relentless action of the sea over many centuries. Date: 4th May 2014.
