Glen Canyon Park, San Francisco (10/22/2011) The backlit Pampas Grass (Cortaderia selloana?) caught my eye (you can also see one across the canyon), and the rays of the rapidly falling sun were just a bonus (helped by the 041 Filter). I pretty much metered for the highlights and subtracted 2EV (placing the pampas grass plumes at zone 7) as I usually do for this B&W slide film. The amazing thing is that the canyon wall was very thin in the negative but is still scannable (and printable). Sigmund Stern Grove, San Francisco, CA I had walked much of the perimeter of both parks that afternoon and was starting to get a bit tired of lugging all my gear around (Backpack full of Hasselblad gear and a tripod in a sling bag). Sather Tower, Berkeley California, 10/1/2011 Sather Tower is a campanile (bell and clock tower) on the University of California, Berkeley campus. It is more commonly known as The Campanile due to its resemblance to the Campanile di San Marco in Venice, and serves as UC Berkeley's most recognizable symbol. It was completed in 1914 and first opened to the public in 1917. The tower stands 307 feet (93.6 m) tall, making it the third tallest bell and clock-tower in the world. It was designed by John Galen Howard, founder of the College of Environmental Design, and it marks a secondary axis in his original Beaux-Arts campus plan. My longest exposure yet; I can see a few white ghosts on the pond from geese and ducks but other than that it came out pretty well. There were people all over the place in this scene but none of them stood still long enough to get recorded. I was pretty lucky with the stillness of the air as well, it was kind of breezy up to that point in the day. I don't know what made me do it, I could have opened up the aperture some and had a shorter exposure, but I just went ahead and went for it. I actually set an alarm on my phone to tell me to close the shutter. A completely natural shot of a courting pair of beautiful demoiselles. The superbly coloured azure green male flies towards the golden coloured female ~ gently touching her to evoke a flirty response. This image was taken using vintage Carl Zeiss glass and shot using manual mode and manual focus to the best of my abilities ~ so the image is much 'softer and smoother with a wonderfully natural colour rendition' ~ that you most often don't see ~ when shooting with modern optics... The shot became the priority above - the accuracy of focus and so composition and natural behaviour was the requirement...
