This images is one of a few showing some of the details adorning the façade of the Hotel de Ville (city hall) in downtown Paris. This specific section is a small part of the main tower on top of the building (the clock tower) which reads Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité, which is the national motto of France and the Republic of Haiti. Although this slogan finds its origins in the French Revolution, it was not institutionalized until the Third Republic at the end of the 19th century. It is also the motto of the Grand Orient de France and the Grande Loge de France.
